If those numbers are true, then you save about $140 in gas by renting.
So your true out of pocket is $35.
If someone asked me whether I'd drive my own and put 1400 miles on it or cough up $35 and drive something else, I'd start coughing.
and at our trucks ages mileage becomes a bigger factor than for these guys with new rides.
I plan on keeping my truck a long time and would pay the small change to keep those miles off.
Some may think eight years is a long time but, for me it's barely broken in.

Truck, 1400 miles at 15mpg = 93.33 gal X $2.80per gal = $261.33.
Rental, 1400 miles at 30mpg =46.66gal x $2.80per gal = $130.66 + $175.00 rental = total $305.66.

Yep, but any way it goes it would cost more for the rental. Also that $175 better be unlimited milage. Most contracts are for 100 miles a day. Plus a milage charge for anything over.
Personally, I think I would still drive the truck. More comfortable, unles you rent a Lincoln, you are used to it, which is another comfort factor, and overall cheaper.

Take the truck...
You bought it to drive it. Never understood the whole "I don't want to put the miles on it" unless it is a lease. In the grand picture of owning the truck is the 1400 miles you will put on it going to mean anything??

Let's keep it simple.
The difference will be $175(rental) minus [(46.66gal 'half the gas') times ($ 'per gallon')]

Just drive the truck you own and enjoy the trip!

Raoul, just sell him a couple of goats for $10 each, they can pull a cart for him on the trip, and when he gets home he can have a BBQ.

If gas cost is $3.75 per gallon, it's a wash.
$3.25 - Rental car cost is $23.36
$3.00 - Rental car cost is $35.02
$2.75 - Rental car cost is $46.69
$2.50 - Rental car cost is $58.35
One other thing to consider is he has a seven year old truck, he drives it and breakdowns are on him.
With a rental car, one phone call and in about an hour you're on your way.
