September auto sales numbers

http://www.detroitnews.com/apps/pbcs...34/1148/AUTO01
General Motors Corp. said its September vehicle sales rose compared to a year ago; its rivals Ford and Toyota posted sales declines.

GM said it sold 337,640 vehicles, up 4 percent over 2006, despite its planned cutback in fleet sales and flat incentive spending.

The well-regarded Cadillac CTS and fuel-sipping Chevrolet Cobalt were among top September performers for GM. More than 5,400 of the CTS model moved off dealer lots, GM said.

American Honda Motor Co. Inc. said its sales were a September record of 127,200, up 9.4 percent from last year. Sales at the company's Acura division, however, were down.

Chrysler LLC sold 159,799 units in the month, down 5 percent from 168,888 a year ago. Like other domestic automakers, Chrysler is reducing fleet sales and said that category was down 20 percent. Strong performers for the month included the Sebring sedan, Chrysler Aspen and Jeep Wrangler.

Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. said it sold 213,043 units in the month, down 4.4 percent from 2006. The company's Camry sedan and Prius Hybrid, however, posted their best-ever September sales, Toyota said, as did the company's Lexus luxury car unit.

Ford Motor Co. said September sales of 189,863 units were down 21 percent compared to a year ago.

Sales to retail consumers were off 15 percent; the company also continued a planned withdrawal from sales to daily rental car fleets, which were off 62 percent in September.

However, Ford said, it was the best month so far for its Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX crossover utility vehicles.

The Dearborn automaker sold 11,632 Edge and 3,805 of the MKX. The Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner crossovers also performed well.

Other automakers reporting today include:

*Mercedes-Benz USA, 22,459 units, up 13 percent

*Subaru of America, 16,457 units, up 2 percent

*Mitsubishi Motors North America Inc., 12,102 units, up 17.6 percent

*Volvo Cars of North America LLC, 8,425 units, down 13 percent

*Hyundai Motor America, 33,214 units, down 0.5 percent

*Nissan North America Inc., 94,269 units, up 6.7 percent
Good numbers for GM, but Ford is sure hurtin'!

Ford's #'s arent as bad as they seem. They have cut sales to rental car companies to help their image and stabilize re-sale values. Not to mention very little money is made on sales to rental companies.
