jena 6 walk out

so on my way to ASU today i was listening to a hip hop station on sirius and they were talking about the jena 6 and how the charges are rediculous and racist, also that the jurry was all white people which makes it an unfair trial, and they said that today they(forgot who i think the group of celebs supporting them) asked for all students to support the jena6 by walking out of class at 12:00 ......12:00 came and not a sigle person left

this jena 6 thing is way out of proportion 6 people beating up another unconsious person deserve to be tried as adults for attempted murder dosnt matter what color thier skin is

also today i saw a man on campus with a poster that said "how can racism still exist?" i thought of a very good answer to his question but me being the nice guy i didnt say it but here is what i thought to myself "thats easy sir black people try to get away with anything if the defendant is white"

I heard on the radio that no black folks responded to their summons to report for jury duty that day. So the prosecution and defense had no blacks to choose from when it came time to select the jury. Somehow, that does not fit the mainstream media's template when reporting this story, so it is conveniently left out. I also heard that the tree described in the media as 'whites only' was routinely used as a meeting spot for persons of other races.

Makes you wonder what else has been left out or mis-reported, doesn't it?

Racism is bad, mmmkay? But inflaming race relations in this country with sensationalistic reporting is bad, too.

Sensation sells, but that whole situation was a mess. I think the difference in prosecution methods in the prosecution of black teens and white teens guilty of the same crime, was just the spark that ignited the gas in Jena, same as in Paris, TX earlier this year.

The folks that live there, have probably been there their whole lives, the adults and the kids. And, as an example- when you live in a sesspool your whole life, you get used to, or simply no longer notice the smell.

But, when you leave and go somewhere nice, then come back "home", the smell is evident and overpowering. I notice the difference in folks (whites and blacks) when I go back home now. Not that I was looking for it, it was always there- I just hadn't noticed how blatant it was, until I left and came back.

There was/is something quite stinky in Jena, only this time- no one had to leave and come back tosee/hear/smell/feel it...

One of the major news mags mentioned that there were 4-5 blacks summoned, and none showed up. Their lack of response (which they also said is normal) did make national news.

I live in Texas now, and I've been called for jury duty four times in ten years- and I live in a county of over 300,000 people. (**Just lucky I guess**), I have never served on a jury, but the one time I was selected (and dismissed) I was juror number two.

If you ever get called for jury duty, and your juror number is over 14, no matter what your race, chances are- you won't get picked.

Did anyone watch the Little Rock Central: 50 years later special on HBO? 50 years later, the blacks and whites go to school together, but everyone congregates with their own cliques/flocks, and even in the class rooms, the classes are still segregated. When they asked the kids why, their answer, "It's always been that way".

There were a few less than intelligent comments uttered by the kids on the show, as well some very correct ones- but for the most part- it was well done- I thought. The show clearly showed careful planning made by one side, tempered by very poor decision making on the other.

So, when you live in a melting pot like North Dallas, Grand Prairie, Arlington, Plano, Frisco, Allen, etc.. Whites and blacks intermingle, they get along well- because aside from the kids- you'll be hard pressed to find two adults that were born and raised in Texas. Not saying that Texas is inherently racist (I don't think so), but what I have seen is, folks don't bring the kind of idiocy to their new town/suburb, that exists in small town America.

That's why I enjoyed the military so much. By the end of basic, if you had any racial apprehension, you realized that everything you thought about the other races, was BS. Some of my best friends in the Army were white, black, hispanic, Asian- it didn't matter, we all got along.

Some might say it's because we had the common bond of being in the military. That of similar mindsets. Well, the military wasn't always integrated either. It was ssegregated as well. If the military can blend into a woven society, why can't regular society.

We all share a common bond as well.

Although Kennedy was speaking on international relations when he spoke the words I will quote below. I think his words ring equally true with regard to race relations in this country, when he stated, "our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's future. And we are all mortal."

That really should be enough to get started- but we haven't had the success one would expect of members of the most giving, christian based, richest most powerful nation on the planet.

It's somewhat disappointing, really- to see that as far as we've come- there's still so far to go. It's almost like driving to Dallas from LA, gettign to El Paso, and feeling like you're almost there, until you see the sign that says, "Dallas 586 miles" and you wonder, "Will we ever get there???"

I wonder.

I did not read the article, but...

I am shocked beyond words- just from the picture...

I tell you what, I'd kick my kid's but for letting them put a noose around his neck- then the one that held him up would catch a severe beating, as well as the ones who sponsored the play.

But, since it seemed staged, I'm sure it was probably a reenactment of a past event... At least, it better be.

Ok I read it...

In a word. STUPID.

I tell you what- you shoudl not have to demonstrate what the heck a noose is for, around a child (or anyone's) neck.

I'd be fighting mad...

I'm just glad my sister isn't at GSU. She was the editor of the GSU Newspaper her last two years- I'm sure this editor, who blew off the instruction of the President, will be doing the duffle bag drag, right about...

Now.

Yes.

I'm against the censorship of the media...

This isn't China or Russia... If it happened, it needed to be reported...
