Authorities said they arrested 10 people and seized more than $500,000 in cash after breaking up a smuggling ring that collected millions of beverage containers in other states and cashed them in for 10 cents apiece in Michigan.

Ahh... can deposits. The same type of stuff used to go on with the returnable 16oz Coke/DP/Pepsi bottles back in the early 80's.

I was always wondering about the people in NW Ohio--the Toledo aarea---that could buy the pop in Ohio and drive five minuts and get some money back.

at least it's just pop cans. In Vancouver, BC they're swiping anything they can get their hands on. Last week they got $50,000 worth of aluminum brackets that was sitting in a construction yard waiting to get used on the new convention center that's being built. Last month a large area had their phones go out because someone ripped out a giant chunk of copper phone wire. They steal gutter grates and anything else they can get their hands on.

I was wrong. It was $250,000.00 worth of brackets as told here.
The phone wire was three 150meter lengths as told hereand while searching for that I found they even stole part of a roof from a school here

Hey they're enterprising anyhow! That's one of the biggest problems with the can deposits, not every state has them. Oregon does the deposit thing and I know a few folks from Washington that return their cans down there. Dishonest, yes, but what really can be done to stop it?

LMAO!!

Kramer and Newman, crunchin' the numbers...

Copper wire theft is gettin' to be a BIG problem around here.. any building under construction is having to hire overnight security, a few they've caught have made a couple hundred thousand $ just over the last year or so..

Copper theft is big around here too. There's been a few guys electrocuted trying to steal hot wires. I try to feel bad for them, but just can't...

there's even been a couple times where some genius has tied his truck to a service panel and drove off, pulling as much wire as possible... I believe this is justifiable homicide...

What a waste of time and money on the governments part on trying to prosecute these guys. They need to try and catch real criminals not soda can smugglers!

Just curious but how exactly are they stealing other peoples money???

Is it that only cans purchased in MI are able to recieve the $.10 back upon turning it in for recycling?

It just seems silly fussing over people turning in cans. If someone wants to gather large amounts of cans and sell them in another state I dont see why its illegal. I am glad they are pitching in cleaning all the litter up. I wish they would come to Dallas and pick up cans.

Correct me if im wrong but I beleve that Michigan pays an extra 10c when they purchase the pop cans. I really dont see it as stealing, I mean that must be alot of work to get 500g of cans together. I see bums collect cans all the time and no one arrests them.
