Yes. Get a cheap office switch or hub, some ethernet cables, and setup file sharing on both pcs.

Way cheaper than buying a USB drive.

Crossover cable. Cheaper than ^^^. Saves you from buying a router and a second cable.

If your not going to be using both computers or sharing internet on both.... Then x's 2 on ticals suggestion. Thats what I did for years when I only had 2 computers and didnt have any network percibles to need a full router/switch.

I would think with a new laptop that you would be wanting a wireless router too. If you get one of those it should also have ports for the old computer then just setup file sharing and transfer the files.

Personally, I would go with the USB drive, not because it is cheaper or anything like that, but because once you do the transfer, you can still use that foryour music and play it wherever you happen to be on a computer, or in some cases now, car receivers have USB ports.

Just checked prices on Newegg. You can get a 4GB for as low as $30.

A new method of data transfer that is very fast and very easy is the

"Tornado" transfer tool.

Very useful for the task you mention but also for data transfer from an old to a new computer.

It works without drivers and you simply connect between USB ports on the 2 computers and a window opens on each, saying "This Computer" and "That Computer".
You just drag and drop from one half of the window to the other on whichever computer suits you best.

Last week I bought a three pack of 2gb San Disk thumbdrives for 49.00 from Costco and they are also Ready Boost capable for Vista.

Dang dude, thats $60, he could buy a good wireless router for that and have $10-$20 left over.

If you want a USB bridge cable (which is all that Toronado is) they are cheap, like $8.
