Navy's Swastika

Forty years ago, in 1967, the U.S. Navy built four L-shaped barracks at their base in Coronado, California (--right outside of San Diego). When the barracks were done, Navy officials noticed a problem: The four L-shapes made a perfectly-formed SWASTIKA.

--But, at the time, they decided not to do anything about it. . . because you couldn't really see the swastika shape from the ground.

--Now, thanks to Google Earth, everyone has instant access to satellite images of every spot on the planet. People started noticing the swastika-shaped barracks. . . and FREAKING OUT.

--Word eventually got to the Anti-Defamation League, who asked the Navy to do something about the swastika.

--And the Navy decided that, yeah, that's probably a good idea. Scott Sutherland, a deputy public affairs officer for Navy Region Southwest, says, quote, "We don't want to be associated with something as symbolic and hateful as a swastika."

--The Navy will spend up to $600,000 changing the walkways, landscaping and solar paneling on and around the barracks. . . so that, when you see them from above, they don't look like a swastika anymore. (Los Angeles Times)

Who cares... it's just a building... Like I can think of many derogatory things to knock at the Pentegon for as it's shape.

Ahh, oh... how dare I offend the Pentagon's shape.

While I'm sure the Navy didn't intentionally sign on for this. I'm certain the architect knew WTH he was doing- when he designed that building...

Some things are accidents, other things are people being fooled.

Some folks are ignorant, others are in love with the fascination of Hitler and **** Germany. I saw a young boy (17-19) about 2 years ago, with the "SS" emblem from Hitler's elite soldiers, tattooed on his neck.

He didn't mean, Monte Carlo, Impala, Chevelle, or Camaro "SS" either.

Exclamation

Walkways, landscaping and re-arrangement of solar panels is NOT going to do anything to "disguise" the "oh so offensive" shape of the barracks themselves. I say the barracks should be torn down completely and rebuilt. Perhaps in the shape of two triangles overlapping would make up for this error in judgement made 40 years ago.

Ppl gotta get their panties out of a wad.

Hell yes it needs to be made into one of those rainbow symbol things and 50 million in reparations need to be paid.

Good movie.

* Disclaimer: by my approval of the movie itself, I do not condone the actions within or represented by the characters portrayed by hollywood.. Even still, "Bite the curb" was my favorite phrase for some time.

Carry on.
