Here is a link for the CDL manual I used when I got my CDL several years ago.

Here is a link to the pre-trip inspection section:

Here is the link to the entire manual:

Hes taking the test tomorrow and hasnt even seen the pretrip list yet?

He needs to get the list and study.

I beleive there are about 120 things to inspect.

He will also have to perform the Airbrake test which he has to know how to do correctly.

He cant just walk in and wing it.

I aced the written test and passed the driving test on the first try, but I had to go back 3 times to pass the pre-trip.

He should also be very verbal when doing the pre-trip. If he's looking at the lug nuts he should say "looking at lug nuts", if he's inspecting the exhaust he should say "checking the exhaust for leaks and anything loose" and so on. Don't forget to test everything including low air warnings, wipers, horns, find the reflectors, fire ext., spare fuses, etc. Above all, make sure to buckle up before releasing the brakes. Not sure if it's on the list but it's also a good idea to release the brakes and hold a full brake application with the pedal for 30secs or so to check for air loss. Much better to find you have a leak on the application side before you start rolling then the first time you use your brakes.
I took my cdl when they first started giving them out and passed everything the first try. Not sure how it is now but back then I had to take three seperate written tests. Air brakes, General Knowledge and Combination Vehicles. If you go for any other endorsements like hazmat then it would be more.
Good luck to him.

Hey Captain..

How did your friend do on the CDL test? Pass?

Just curious...why is he getting the CDL? To drive full time?

Yeah he passed in one of the new Freightliners that nobody else even wanted to drive. He's up in Morton, IL now for the next couple weeks to take the rest of his training. He is gonna be driving for Star Transport INC.
