Authorities evacuated the area around a Winn-Dixie in the West Volusia Regional Shopping Center on Woodland Boulevard after receiving a call about a robbery in progress and hostages being held.
A tactical team of the DeLand Police Department and the Sheriff's office went inside the store and searched the entire store, finding nobody inside.
Witnesses said that around 11 a.m. about 20 people left the store with their hands up in the air. DeLand police said they don't know why they people came out of the store or whether they had been held hostage.
Initially, police got a 911 call from an employee who was able to leave the store before the incident began. She said she saw something that made her suspicious -- a group of people sitting on the floor in the front of the store. The woman said there were at least two men with them. The men did not have guns, and did not wear anything to disguise their appearances, according to the witness.
Around the same time, a bomb threat had been called in. Police at first thought it might have been a robbery attempt.
There were earlier reports from emergency personnel that there were at least three gunmen and 40 hostages in the store.
Witnesses from nearby stores told News 13 that were not evacuated, but had been told to remain inside their stores until the situation is under control.
Second Threat At Clermont Winn-Dixie
Some grocery shoppers in Lake County also got quite a scare after an early morning bomb threat.
Management at the Winn Dixie off of West Colonial Drive in Clermont, said they received a call just before 10 a.m. Friday, telling them there was an explosive in the building.
They said the caller was either of foreign decent or had disguised their voice. Management evacuated the building, and then law enforcement stepped in to secure the area.
"We came up to the store and there were fire trucks, there were Lake County deputies and Clermont police,” said shopper Michelle Hayse. “We walked into the store and there were really no customers inside."
The store was reopened about an hour after the call. Authorities deemed the store safe and management said the store went back to business as usual.
FBI Investigating Store Threats Across Country
Meanwhile bomb threats and extortion attempts this week against stores around the country continued Friday.
The FBI said four more threats forced evacuations at stores in northeastern Ohio early Friday.
The threats were phoned in to a Wal-Mart and three Giant Eagle grocery stores. They were all temporarily evacuated, but each reopened within three hours after being searched by police.
The FBI said it thinks all of the threats came from the same individual or group.
Authorities said Wednesday they were investigating bomb threats at more than 15 stores in at least 11 states. Most involved an extortion attempt. Authorities said the threats appear to be coming from overseas.
