Its a combination of factors. High wage and benefit costs are one, but opening up to foreign markets are the largest. Asia and latin America have no interest in bettering the quality of life for its workers, they want the foreign money that comes from NA corps relocating to them due to cheap labor.

India can sell a new car for $2500, the only way US manufacturers could compete with such low costs would be to completely eliminate benefits and lower wages to below a living standard for all workers. Thats the problem with globalization and "free" trade agreements. It brought lower cost goods to consumers in the industrialized West, and created huge profits for big box chains like Wal-Mart, Rona, Best Buy etc. But this is the price we are going to pay for it.

Oh no of course its there fault.

I mean, there is no excuse for having a few hundred thousand employees costing an average of $71 per hour and not making a profit.

Damn Ford Executives!

GM executives confirmed that the prospect of shifting operations away from North America was very real. 'We have seen it in every other industry.

Its not Fords fault, Sheesh....try to grasp an understanding of global economics.

Oh, I understand all too well how the snow globe of inner management works. Those guys couldn't manage to balance the contents of a damn piggy bank. Why do you think they are in such an economic funk? They need to stop pointing their fingers of blame at others and point the thumb back at themselves instead.

Oh, and I fixed some of your spelling errors. Nice job, though it is late.

Why not? This is a direct result of building inferior products for YEARS. You design/engineer a cheap product, people go elsewhere. Look at the facts.

Well, thanks for the note, I know I would've totally forgotten (yeah, that's the word) to be depressed if you left us all.
I'm pretty sure he meant economic depression.

If GM & FORD abandon their Manufacturing plants in the US., the American people will boycott their products, much more than they do now! Their only business will be sales outside of the USA! They surlely will be planting the seeds of their own DEMISE..................& deservingly so if they take that option!.....................

Since they cant compete when it comes to costs, they have to distinguish themselves from the imports. Something they used to do very well, think Taurus, Fox-Stang. Now they need something else to get them back in the spotlight.

I dont believe this will actually happen but if it did, I would never buy from them again. Sure I almost always buy used vehicles, but still.

You can look back now and say that but at the TIME they were what people wanted. The entire point of business, find what people want and give them it. Its exactly what Ford and GM need to do again.

You may not like the look of the Foxes now, but how many did Ford sell, even with the underpowered 2.3? And they are still everywhere, think about it.

The Taurus was a very functional and efficient vehicle, not very exciting or a performance car. But again, at the time of its release in the mid-80s thats what consumers wanted. And Ford gave them the best option to meet their demands.

Toyota is doing well here because of reliability, better resale value and good gas mileage. IMO the reliability is percieved reliability, with the new run of models the reliability is no better than that of the domestics. That said I do believe risupercrew bring up a valid point. If Ford shut down manufacturing in the U.S. I would not purchase another truck from them. Toyota came here to get a piece of the market, and did a incredible job in doing so. Ford leaving will be viewed by many as them turning a blind eye to the current economic state of the U.S. and contributing to a already bad situation.
