last I heard is that plasma is on the way out as the LCD technology is advancing, this was from a local high end home theater store, not sure how true it is. Also if I remeber correctly that Sony does not make a plasma tv anymore and has no plans to do so. So they have all of their money on LCD.
I'm hoping to get a new TV/theater system this winter so the research will be starting soon.

lmao. That's rich. Are you the same guy posting this complete misinformation in all of the theatre threads?

Plasma is STILL the best picture quality option for flat panel TVs(In the eyes of most pros, and yes I realize this is to an extent a debatable statement), oh, and it's a better buy than LCD. So how the hell does it make even a drop of sense that LCD is "taking over" and plasma is on its way out?

Furthermore, anyone who uses a STORE (read: Someone selling a product) for their information needs help finding new sources. That's like letting a car salesman tell you about a vehicle- they don't know JACK about the cars they sell, they just say whatever they need to in order to SELL them.

PS- Sony doesn't make plasmas because Sony SUCKS and their plasmas FLOPPED. Again, to clarify, SONY'S PLASMAS sucked, not plasma in general.

*The number one selling TV set in America IS a 42 inch PLASMA TV. (Panasonic)

More models means what? Nothing.

There are more models of suzuki cars than Ferrari models- so Suzuki must make better cars, right?

Sorry, flawed logic.

Take it easy Mr Spock
I didnt say anything about one being better than the other.
Maybe it's a little something called supply & demand?

Thanks for all the replys! Today I talked with an old neighbor of mine that we just biult a new house for and he told me that another "neighbor" (lives down about 1.5 blocks) is in the home electronics field. I guess that the guy was the buyer for a reigonal store chain and he is now selling and installing home theater systems. So I am going to call him up tonight and see what he suggests for my living room and also for the family room when/if I get a chance to finish the basement this winter.

Go $%^& yourself

And if you were referring to supply and demand you would have said it...unless of course you like to communicate like a woman and beat around the bush instead of just getting to the point

what in the hell are you getting so defensive about? Slow down take a breath and read my post. Now I clearly stated that I didn't know how true it was cause basically I don't have the end all knowledge between the two types. I also saw some of this info awhile back on the Discovery channel or HGTV or the likes of. And before you jump on this statement I know you cannot believe everything you see on TV or the internet. If plasma "was" on the way out that does not mean the ones that are currently on the market are junk, it just means that the technology is changing and LCD's are getting larger in size and better picture quality.

Sony is still one of the top TV manufactures out there, if their plasma flopped I'm pretty confident that they could put money into it if they wanted and come out with a good one. For the reason they don't, who knows I'm not an executive there deciding where to put the money. I don't have any favoritism
towards Sony either, the only thing that I own Sony is a PS2. I buy whatever product that suits my needs the best.

Yes I Know that salesmen at stores are just trying to sale and sometimes willing to say anything for a sale. Although this particular store carries several brands with just as many plasmas and LCD. The guy I talked to spent at least 1/2 hour going through the +/- of both knowing that I was not going to buy and was just looking for information.

The #1 selling doesn't mean the end all be all. Not everyone goes out and buys the #1 selling car, people buy what suits their needs. Some people like LCD's and some Plasma, it's not a big deal.

BTW I have never posted in the theater section. Didn't I also post I was going to start researching these at the end of my post, implying my knowledge is limited. I hope to learn more so when I do buy I will make an educated decision.

Sounds like you're on the right path there ! Keep us posted I'd like to know what a real expert or at least someone with a reputation to up hold suggests!

Sorry about the delay in replying, I just plan forgot to. My neighbor who does home audio for a living came over, looked at the lighting, also the placment of TV jacks for the best placement of the TV. He suggested either a LCD or a plasma w/glare filter, and he also suggested that for the size of the room a 42" would be our best bet. Then we asked him about brands of TVs, he said to stay way from HP, Vizio, and Westinghouse. His favorite Plasma are Panisonic, Sony and LG. His favorite LCD's are Tosiba (sp?), Hitatchi, and Samsung.

So we ended buying a 42" Panisonic plasma w/glare filter (TH-42PX77U). It came in yesterday so we picked it up last night and hooked it all up. WOW!! I LOVE this TV! Be bought it from Sears, it was on sale for $1199, then we got $150 off and 6 months no interest/no payments. So $1050 before taxes. It was the best money that I have spent in awhile.

Good call. the panny plasmas blow the socks off TVs that cost a hell of a lot more, for a hell of a lot less.

On a side note, I'm guessing you remembered what he said wrong, because Sony doesn't make Plasma TVs
