drywall quotes?
Well, I think I've finally let my wife talk me into hiring out the drywall in our house, but I've never had anyone do this for me, so I have no idea what to expect as far as quotes...
I know it will vary based on the size, location, complexity, phase of the moon, location of Venus, etc, etc... but what's a good general rule here? There's approximately 1700 sq ft of floor space, 8' walls, except the kitchen/living room (26'x26') which has 9' walls and a vaulted ceiling that will not be drywall...
Just trying to get an idea of what to expect...

Smart move, really smart.
I just re did a wall in the family room. It had some fake brick that I've looked at for four years. I got a bug in my butt Sunday night, went out bought the Sheetrock, studded over the brick and hung the drywall. Perfect and fast.
Now comes the mud and tape and sanding. Oh lord it still looks bad. I suck at this part of it.

Vader, post pix?
When I built my 1 1/2 story log house in late 2000 I hired out the drywall work.
All of the interior walls are drywall with the inside of the outside wall being log. There is no drywall on the ceiling on the first floor. I too have an open kitchen / dining / living room with a 21' vaulted ceiling that continues over the upper floor loft which was drywalled.
Total it ran me around $3500 which included all materials, finishing and the ceiling has a 'snowflake' texture on it. It took one day for 3 guys to hang and first coat the ceiling which I was impressed with as they used 5/8" 14' long in 95* heat

It varies depending on what part of the country your in.
Around here a quote involves counting the board.
(how many 12x4 sheets will it take to do your house)
Once the number of board is calculated that number is multiplied three times
Once for hanging.
Once for taping.
Once for finishing (3 coats).
Also, make sure your quote price includes material.
If you have a chance to see some of their work elsewhere, pay attention to the scrap piles outside after hanging.
If you see pieces longer than 3' or you see machine edges in the pile on a custom jobsite, they're padding their calculation.
A machine edge is the 4 foot side that comes from the factory.
A non-machine edge is any edge that has had a knife blade taken to it.
I used to count board many years ago but, 1700 sq ft doesn't tell me nothing I can help you with.
That 1700 sq ft could be one room that I could hang with 59 boards.
Or it could be 1700 sq ft of cut up eggcrate maze rooms that would be 985 boards.
Walk the house yourself and visualize (count) how many 12 foot sheets it will take to do each room.

I've sheetrocked myself.... the hardest part is making the seams look good. I'm not bad at it... just takes some common sense and some sand paper.
I'd also recommend a roto-zip...
