5.5 or 6.5 bed????????

Hey, I am about to purchase a new f150 supercrew but I'm having a problem. I don’t know if I should go with the 5.5 bed or the 6.5 bed. I'm used to having a 6-foot bed truck, but I feel that the 4 door trucks look better with the smaller bed. I want to make sure I make the right decision, let me know what you think. Thanx

What do you usually use your truck bed for? Are you gonna put a toolbox in there? This is somethin you're just gonna have to figure out and decide what's best for yourself. Personally, I think the 5.5' bed is useless, but that's just me.

I have a '05 Screw with the 5.5 bed. It's fine for what I need, but if I was doing it again I'd go for the 6.5. The 6.5 beds look just fine on a Screw IMO.. Just harder to park in tight quarters but still not so bad as to offset the bigger bed.

Get the 6.5..

I mean, who has ever said, "damn, there's too much room back here.."? LOL

I'm not going to put a tool box in the bed, and I dont realy haul much. I'm fixing up a house, so I like having a truck around.

Sounds like the 5.5' bed would be right for you then.

What about the future? Most self employed need to carry something. Also an ATV? motorcycle in mind?

Well, depends on how you feel about carrying a bike in the bed with the tailgate down. I have the 6.5' bed, and when I have my toolbox in I can't get my YFZ450 in the bed without leaving the tailgate open.

What about using a bed extender and leaving the tailgate open?

Most people know if they need the larger bed.
Since a 6-foot was fine for you and you're wondering if a 5.5 would work then it probably will.

Take the addtional cost of the longer bed and instead apply it towards a tow package.

the next pickup i buy will have an 8' bed...i should have bought one this time around, but live and learn

in all seriousness though, the 5.5' bed with the tailgate down is about 1" shy of 8'...modular 8' building materials such as plywood, osb, drywall, etc. won't fit in a 6.5' bed without the tailgate down either, so it's not a huge improvement in that regard

i'm sure some atvs and motorcycles will fit the 6.5' with the tailgate up, which is a plus

what got me that i wasn't expecting is deciding i might like to use a slide-in camper...although i can make it work with my 5.5' bed with a hitch extension to pull my jeep, i'd be better with the 6.5' and best if i'd have just bought a 3/4 or 1-ton pickup with an 8' bed

we went for the 5.5' due to the shorter wheelbase being easier to maneauver and park in the city--i call it my 'city pickup'

next time, i'll go back to the country version with the 8' crew cab 3/4 ton and call it a day

good luck, you'll figure it out...and the 5.5' bed still hauls plenty of volume--i had a weider 3-station weight machine and camping gear for a week, and 2 bicycles in mine a couple of weeks ago

I have a quad and a 6.5" bed. Very happy I went this route as the smaller bed would leave the rear tires on the actual tailgate. While the tailgate had given me no reasons to doubt its structual integrity I still dont like the idea of a 600lbs ATV bouncing on the tailgate as I drive down the road. Dont get me wrong I still have to leave the tailgate down when hauling the atv, but the tires are actually resting on the bed itself and not the tailgat, my atv just has a ghetto booty so I cant actually close the tailgate or it will hit the racks and what not. Also if you camp its a great make shift tent, just toss a tarp over the bed and secure it to the bottom body molding or rims and toss a couple sleeping bags in there for a greats night rest. Incase it rains your dry and it saves the hassle of a tent. I say 6.5 all the way.

Get the 6.5 and be done with it. No need in second guessing yourself....its better to have to much than not enough ! Parking isnt and issue I can fit my quad and a cooler in the back with the tailgate shut...I'll get pics next time I ride.
Heres mine with the 6.5er

Hey Shane, what are those wheels you've got? I've got the same color screw, always thought some black wheels would look best.

Size? Brand? Cost?

Thanks!!

Its always nice to have more then what you need but it sucks to have less then what you need. 6.5 is the way to go.
