Computer help needed

On my C Drive, in the Program section I have a program CA. The first extension is PPRT and under that is bin and logs. In the bins section there are a bunch of application files that reference E-Trust pest patrol.

Anyone with any ideas ?

Kenny

CA is Computer Associates. E-Trust is one of their brand names and Pest Patrol is one of their products, it's an antispyware app.

What is your question?

It appears to be slowing down my system and I really don't remember installing anything from them. I know that I should do better but I use the AOL version of McAfee

So un-install it or at least remove it from running at startup.

If you have 2 different AV suites running, then it would definitely slow your system. Everything you modify, add, open, etc would be scanned twice.

I'd look at McAfee as being what slows you down more than Pest Patrol.

Pest Patrol is not an AV, it's an antispyware.

I'd uninstall it and also uninstall all the AOL security crap. Go to http://free.grisoft.com and install AVG Free antivirus. For antispyware I'd install Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware 2007 (both free) and use them as manual scanners.

Most AV suites have an anti-spyware portion. So again it is a double hit.

For decent AV software, you might want to look here. They have comparisons of most of AV suites.

Through some dumb luck I found what it is - I thinK. It was insatlled at the same time as the AOL computer security stuff. It won't let me remove because it is always in use. I will check the the sites you suggested so I can get rid of the AOL AV because it appears that I have no real control.

Thanks to all and if you have any other ideas please respond.

Suites, yes - standalones, no. AVG does have a suite with antispyware, but that's not free. You CAN get free AVG antispyware - it's fully featured for 30 days, then reverts to a manual-only scanner.

Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware are MANUAL scanners and do not run in the background.

What AOL has for free is a suite. McAfee's security center.

CA I believe does own McAfee now, but E-trust is a different product. Wouldn't surprise me any if AOL gave you both.

kick AOL to the curb. The program itself is huge and it is always running in the bacjground hogging resources. IE all the way, AOL will literally take over a PC. It wants to do everything from playing media flies and movies to saving items under its own extensions. It is pretty much an electronic Hitler

If your having trouble un-installing, just boot into safe mode and do it.

McAfee's Security Center is a piece of CRAP and AOL itself is worse. AOL is the Internet on training wheels.

Back here in the "sticks" all we had was AOL dial-up for years. I now have internet access through the Intelos but it still is not very fast. My dad (87 years old) still can only get dial-up so thats why I keep AOL for mail and instant messaging. As soon as we can get better service for my Dad we will drop our account - but for now AOL is the best we can do at my Dad's location.
