Haha, whenever I think of those speeding cameras I get a picture of Jim Careys face in my head. The part at the beginning when he runs the light and it takes a pic of him looking at the camera with the funny look.

Ahhhh, yeah...funny.

I can't speak for the true purpose of traffic cameras, but here's what I've gotten from this thread so far:

Fine of $95, but no points, etc..... These things are all about revenue, and have nothing to do with safety like they claim.

What a Load of Crap.
If you really were speeding, you were in the wrong. No way around it.

Myth busted.
I searched for the story with no luck, but one guy didn't use a bought remedy, instead created his own which worked. It involved and glass cover with electronics as well. He had to wait on redlights for nearly 5 minutes every night after work. This was at midnight hours with no traffic and he wanted to get to bed in order to sleep before his morning classes. After getting about 20 pictures of his car but no place to send the tickets, the cops eventually staked out to catch him. Brilliant idea but now he's screwed.

Mythbusters sucks! lol

Yes they are about revenue. Revenue savings. The expense they save by not having to hire extra patrol officers to catch your butt 11mph over the speed limit.

I think several independent studies contradict your statement that they do not increase safety

"Do speed cameras reduce travel speeds? A 2002 Institute study reported that within 6 months of the implementation of speed cameras in the District of Columbia in 2001, average speeds declined 14 percent and the proportion of vehicles exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 mph declined 82 percent.8 In Garland, Utah, a speed camera system plus extensive media coverage and strong support by city officials successfully reduced average speeds in a 20 mph school zone from 36 to 22 mph.9 Crashes and injuries had been high in the school zone, but 8 months after camera installation there were fewer crashes and not a single injury collision."

"How effective are speed cameras in reducing speeds and crashes? In Victoria, Australia, speed cameras were introduced in late 1989, and police reported that within 3 months the number of offenders triggering photo radar decreased 50 percent.11 The percentage of vehicles significantly exceeding the speed limit decreased from about 20 percent in 1990 to fewer than 4 percent in 1994. A Norwegian study found that injury crashes were reduced by 20 percent on sections of rural roads with cameras.12 Research from British Columbia, Canada, showed a 7 percent decline in crashes and 20 percent fewer deaths the first year cameras were used. The proportion of speeding vehicles declined from 66 percent to fewer than 40 percent, and researchers attributed a 10 percent decline in daytime injuries to photo radar.13 A detailed analysis of speed camera enforcement in Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom, reported that injury crashes in the immediate vicinity of camera sites were reduced 46 percent.14 One of the most ambitious efforts to control traffic speeds on a heavily traveled urban highway is on the M25, which circles London. Speed cameras are used in conjunction with a system of variable speed limits that are adjusted based on weather and traffic conditions. The impact of introducing this combination of variable speed limits and photo enforcement has been an estimated reduction in injury crashes of 10 percent.15"

Additionally cameras allow departments redistribute resources to more important task like catching murderers, rapists, and other violent criminals.

All of this is a bunch of bunk. The only thing this proves is that speeding and accidents were reduced at that particular intersection. When the cameras are first installed there's a spike in the number of fines handed out, then it falls off because everyone knows about the camera and they slow down or stop for the light. Once they pass the camera they speed right back up and possibly blow through the next light where there isn't a camera. Anybody that believes red light cameras make the roads safer is incredibly naive.
