Get a mac. I wish I would have when I went into college. I went in to the engineering program and I had to have a computer with certain specifications on it. I ended up with the Dell 9100 Inspiron, which isnt a bad computer, but looking back I would have gone with the Mac...

I don't know what specifications you require but you should seriously consider the words SMALL and LIGHT. I have an Averatec 2370 12.1 " laptop that weighs 4 lbs. It is my main computer at home and I have no issues reading text on the screen even at my age (middle). This brand seems to be going out of business so maybe you can find another similar small one.

[edit] They still make them. here is a link to my model : http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/aver...&tag=pdtl-list Mine is 2370 not 2371. I only paid $700. Not such a good deal at the current $900.

You should really decide your budget first. Those Imacs look nice around 1,200.

If you want a PC, the new Dell XPS M1330 really looks sweet. 13.3" screen and 4 pounds - and has an optional gaming video chip. If you want something rugged that will get you through 4 years, you can't beat a Thinkpad T series, that's the standard business road warrior.

Depends on what you go to school for. I know as a business major most of what did was all PC based so I would go the PC route. I've had great success with the Dell's I've owned.

I'm about to move off to college too and also about to buy a new laptop...i've had an hp laptop and it's outlasted 2 of my sister's dell laptops... take a look at the new hp laptops they have an awesome painted finish and tons of cool features like HD DVD drive included, TV tuner included, and dvd, music, movie, playback without having to boot up... thats what i'm about to buy...just waiting for the new intel processors to come out in notebooks...

I don't see why a Mac would be a good call for a college student at all. Unless you are doing HEAVY graphical/art type schooling, you basically end up paying a heavy premium for the same performance you could get for less with a PC. Not to mention the broader selection of software and compatibility for PCs...

I say watch Dell for a deal and snag one. They have some unbeatable prices fairly often in their sales. (Check newspaper ads and online).

It lasted thru my first year of college. They are a great company, not too pricey and they have the best customer support.

macs are for sizzies

just think about it like this.....
mac=toyota yaris
velocity micro= bada$$ F150
