I don't know why people are having these problems getting dell memory. It isn't anymore expensive than other manufacturers.

That looks strange having the mb on that side of the case.
That is called "BTX" which is the new Intel standard. It supposedly allows for a quieter computer that still cools well.

Guaranteed compatible 3rd party memory is very little more than generic memory (and generic memory may work just fine) - it's Dell themselves that's raping people when they buy memory direct from Dell. Note my previous post re: Crucial.

That was Intel's proposed standard, and a lot of the PC makers are using them, but if you look at Intel's web site for MBs, the ATX form factor outnumbers the BTX by about 10 to 1. I was going to build a BTX myself a year ago, but could never find any decent cases, so went with the ATX. As far as cooling, that has become less of an issue too, as the newer processors do not run near as hot as the P4 or Pentium D.

I am running a Core 2 Duo with a CoolerMaster Hyper-TX. The C2D runs cool enough that RPM on the processor fan never exceeds 400rpm, even when I start processing video. My Pentium D 840 would often max out the fan when I did video before. The PD 960 was better, but the C2D is so much better. All using the same MB, cooler, and temp settings.
Makes things much quieter.

well guys- the 4 gigs of new ram were delivered yesterday- loaded them in last night- as I reinstalled all my software, pulled all my data back from the external HD- ran great again.

but, got home from work today Dimm_1 and Dimm_4 are exhibiting a "memory compare error" *&&*&^^%%!!!!!
ohhhh boy. dell xps support is gonna get quite a little chat here in a few minutes. I want this fixed asap- new mobo, new ps, new ram, --hell replace the whole damn thing. and while you're at it throw in a couple upgrades for your serious ineptitude to produce a solid 'top of the line' XPS system...

what exactly does "iced" mean?

and good ol dell screwin people over with high priced parts.
Our old dell back from 2001, came with like 128mb ram somethin decent for back then but nothin compared to now. We tried upgrading it by buying more, another stick of 128 was over $300 .

We luckily had another pc that got sold for some reason from dell later that had the same ram so we were able to get that ram.

edit : i hear ya about the parts gettin fixed.
my brother got an xps base level and got hard drives replaced, processors, all that crap. Luckily for me he upgraded everything , processor, vid card, sound card, and i got to build myself an XPS for only 200 dollars where i bought a barebones. Then 300 on a new monitor.

i wont get into all the dell BS thats happened with us over the years.
but youre lucky you got an XPS. It's almostl ike they treat their XPS customers better. Weve had dimension desktops and below good treatment and service is what weve gotten. My brother got an XPS and he can always get service right away, people come to the house to fix things, always online support, WTF lol

I never did like anything but Intel chipsets for Intel processors - that thing of yours has a Nvidia chipset.

I own two XPS systems. I have the XPS 720 H2c Quad Core with dual 768MB 8800 cards and I have the XPS M1710 with the 512MB 7950 video and T7600G CPU. Both have 4GB of RAM and both are running 64-bit Vista Ultimate thanks to my universal MSDN account through my work. The desktop was an impulse buy a couple months ago and hardly gets used at all. Neither computer has given me a single problem. The M1710 gets used constantly and does everything I could ever need. It even plays blu-ray movies...although I do prefer to watch them on the 60" plasma.
