Sounds better than nextel cup. At least Sprint sounds like a racing term.

only because of an injunction.....nascar filed a coutersuit to stop it and kick out every other telecomminucations (primarily alltel, seeing as how they refused Motorolla telecom. from sponsoring Robby Gordon) sponsor in the cup series.

I never did understand the Motorola thing; they sell phones not sell service. AT&T just re-uped with RCR & Jeff Burton for 3 more years. The way I read what you're calling an injunction, is that AT&T was the new sponsor end of story. Nothing temporary.

It's temporary. I have a strong feeling that Nascar will have it's way with the #31.

Also, I feel that in a year or two, they will have their way with Alltel too.

Thought it was permanent. I'm usually up on all this stuff. I hope the judge(s) leave it alone.

NASCAR needs to be careful. It's hard to find sponsors willing to put up 10-15 million a year.

The "switch" to Sprint isn't really a switch at all. Nextel and Sprint merged, with Sprint as the major parent company. Thus, the change to the NEW name...sort of like AT&T become Cingular, and then going back to AT&T again...

Cingular and Alltel had previous sponsorship deals which thus far have been protected by the courts. U.S. District Judge Marvin Shoob issued a preliminary injunction last month that allowed the Cingular logos on Burton's Chevrolet to be changed to AT&T markings.

Shoob also barred NASCAR and any entity affiliated with it from interfering with AT&T's rights as primary sponsor of the car in the Nextel Cup series.

On Sunday, NASCAR asked for a minimum of $100 million in damages in a counter claim against AT&T Inc.

The suit also asks that NASCAR be granted the right to kick AT&T -- and all telecommunications companies other than Nextel -- out of its top series in 2008.

NASCAR alleges breach of contract, fraud and misrepresentation, and conspiracy to aid and abet wrongful interference with Nextel.
The only sponsorship nascar is worried about is the 10yr $700 million deal with nextel to be the primary sponsor of the cup series.

In hindsight it's not like Dale jr making the turn to the dark side.
