Whats wrong with my mouse?

Every now and then my computer acts weird. I hear a "Bing Bong" and my mouse momentary freezes. the cursor stays put then jumps to where I've moved the mouse to.

Then sometime the cursor just freezes and i cant do anything with it. The light on the mouse goes out. I tried unplugging it but it doesn't do anything. If it does this i have to reboot and then it works OK, for awhile.

BTW, Its a 2001 gateway with all the original stuff.

PS. I'm a dummy when it come to computer stuff.

Something is wrong with either the USB port or the mouse. Try a different port or get a new mouse and see if you still have the problem.

PEBCAK or an Eye-Dee-Ten-Tee problem.

Probably not the drivers as the "Bing Bong" sound is most likely the device disconnecting and re-connecting.

I had a problem like this and tried different things and it ended up being the connection. I thought it was always the mouse, or the wires in the cord or something, but it was the actual spot that you plug the mouse into on the back of the computer. Bought myself a mouse that plugs into the USB ports instead and it works like a charm

I know the ID-10-T, what is PEBCAK?

You are probably, most likely right on the "Bing-Bong" sound too. I'd wager thats what it is as well.

I forgot windblows does that by default. I turn my system sounds off, I hate all the annoying noises.

My mouse started doing that, a Logitech I bought to use with my laptop.

I took it and smashed that sumbitch into a zillion pieces with a hammer and bought another one. Problem solved, and I felt a lot better afterwards.

Without getting a demo on what's happening, I might guess a failing hard drive. Could it be locking up, making the boing noise, and then the mouse moves once the hardrive gets spinning again?
