Knee Replacement

Well---going to the MD on Tuesday to set up the date to have my knees replaced. Too much college football, umping, reffing, and other stupid stuff. Arthur Itis finally caught up to me. I have been getting through this umping season with cortizone injections. I want to stretch it out and get it done in November, since I have about 280 sick days.

People who have had it done said that the surgical pain was tremendous, but once you get over that, you are amazed at how good you feel. The only things I have had to date was arthroscopically done on both knees.

Anybody here have this done---and what do you think now?

OUCH! I have had one scope done on my right knee to fix torn cartilage and verify my ACL has been gone for 20 years, other than that no surgeries. Best of luck and God bless you when you finally do go under the knife as well as have a speedy recovery.

A lot also depends upon age. They don't last forever so depending upon age it may have to be done multiple times. Mine are screwed up with arthritis too, but the doc said live with it as longs as you can because it may have to be done in 15 yrs or so again.

i hope i never have to have any procedures done on my knees in my lifetime.
i have something called patellofemoral pain syndrome in both of my knees.

basically if im sitting in theb ack of my truck n someone else is driving, it only takes about 10-15 minutes of sitting in one position to start hurting.
it feels like pain gradually builds up in both my knees and then i have to turn and stretch em out. it gets to be a pain sitting some in sports arenas n stadiums too =\.

im thinkin of physical therapy soon.

referee54, sorry to hear that you have to go through this. I guess we ware out too. I wish you the best. Hopefully you can somehow enjoy the year untill surgery.

This kind of thing scares me. Arthritis runs in my family. In my mid thirties, I'm starting to experiance it a bit.

The only type of surgery I've experianced is for a hernia. It was the worst pain that I've ever experianced. I guess that's a good thing. I've been pretty luck so far.

Best of luck to you!

I'm a development engineer for an orthopaedic company. As mentioned before wait as long as you can before opting for surgery. Also do your homework. Find out what brand and system of knee your doctor is planning to use (every company makes multiple knee systems). Find out what material the knee is made from. There are different alloys that are used in implants and people react differently to them. For example, some people are nickel sensitive, which means that their body reacts to nickel which is not good if the knee has nickel present in the alloy. The reaction could cause the implant to loosen or create an infection. I would assume that you would be tested prior to surgery for any allergies to certain metals used.

I assume that you are having bilaterals (both knees done at once) since you mentioned "knees". If I had to have them both done, I would have them done at the same time. My thinking is that if you are going to be thru the surgery, you may as well only go thru it once, instead of waiting 6mo to a year and doing it again on the other knee.

There are some forums that are about joint replacements, you might check them out. My best advice is do your homework. Just like a part for your truck, you don't want to put something inferior on when it needs to last the miles.

Good luck. I've heard countless success stories from patients. I've talked to people through ramdom conversations, like on a plane, that don't stop thanking me for what I do, and how it has changed their lives, even though I had nothing to do with their actual implants.

Disclamer: I am no expert or doctor, please don't take my advice as so.
