First when was the last time that you rebooted?

Second, does it do it with any audio program or just one?
If your using windows media player try a diferent program. If that works tehn it's a software issue.

Third if all else is fine, then update your audio drivers.

Final call tech support.

Are you sure it's not your speakers? Have you moved them recently?
If you're watching video does it get choppy too or just your sound? Try rebooting and see if that helps. I guess it's possible you could have too many processes running in the background and dragging you down too. XP or Vista?
If none of the above helps you could try updating the sound drivers like PSS-Mag said.

You would have to try updating them manually by finding out exactly what sound chipset you have and checking the manufacturers site, then downloading them and updating using the Advanced method and browsing to them if they don't come in an .exe
If that's what you've already done either forget what I said or try re-installing whatever newest ones are available. You could also check Windows Updates, scan using the "Custom" button and then check under Hardware on the left.
Just for kicks, tell us how many processes you have running. Right click the task bar and choose Task Manager, then click the Processes tab and look in the lower left corner to see how many are running.

This is where I fulfill the equal time requirements of the forum -
Lose the Gateway - get one of these.

Even if you have driver version 5.10.0.5136 already installed, sometimes drivers become curropt. Installing a fresh one over the new one will never hurt anything.

You should reboot after installing the drivers.

If it happens every time you boot the system then it's a critical problem thats not just going to go away.
