Portable Navigation...

I am wanting to buy a portable navigation unit. I've been looking at the TomTom ONE and the Garmin Nuvi 350. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?

I like the Garmin but you can't go wrong with either.

should GPSs for a while and more people came in to get the Garmin after getting rid of their Tomtom. Most people I talked to were extremly unhappy with the Tomtom and besides, Garmin has the best customer service.

I have the Nuvi 350 in my Expedition, and absolutely love it. It's better than the 3 year old Pioneer AVIC in-dash navigation in my Bimmer.

You can take it anywhere, small yet effective in navigation, online updates instead of expensive DVDs, has SD slot for picture book and MP3s, and last several hours with just battery power if you don't want it plugged in.

You can also turn off the safety features so you can make changes while on the go, and so much else. I did a lot of research on portable Navi's before I bought the Garmin, and the Nuvi line of GPS systems are universally the best rated. The TomToms are a step behind.

Here are some pics of my system...

yeah get the garmin, they know gps best, my dad uses their more advance system in his 48 Ocean Yacht sport fish, the nuvi also will fix your mistake if you make a wrong turn or something like that

Garmin C550c here: really good unit. I can confuse it, but it does take some work to do that. Overall, I really like the unit and use it on a regular basis. In some ways, it is both easier to use and more accurate [on the find locations] than my brothers built in unit on his Freestyle.

The 550 is the exact same as the nuvi, just without the expensive downsizing of compontents.

I just got an ad from Delorme, I use their Street Atlas software, for a new product they have. It seems to have quite a few features, plus all the software for your computer that you can load to the GPS. Might be worth a look.

Another Nuvi 350 user here. Works very well in town and out in the county. It makes pursuits so much easier now for calling in cross streets. No more trying to drive and look at street name signs doing 100+ out in the country.

Hey gpaje, I talked to Garmin about the antennae position on these units because like you, I thought it was supposed to be straight up. However, it is supposed to be perpindicular to the unit and parallel with the horizon when in a vehicle mount. The reason the antennae goes that far up is if you are holding the unit in you hand parallel with the horizon, you can still aim the antennae correctly. Just an FYI.

Yea when you have the antenna verticle, you are really killing the reception.

Good to know, thanks guys. I'll try adjusting the antenna, but funny thing is I still get full bars of reception with the antenna straight up.

Garmin without a doubt. I have the Nuvi 660 and it's great. We have a Tom Tom at work and I can't stand it. Be sure to register it with Garmin and they'll send you email when they release new software updates, new maps, etc.
