Question Can anyone help me out with small engine repair (5hp)

So I got this 5hp Briggs motor for my go-cart. The engine sat for 2yrs out in the rain at some guys house. I took the whole thing apart and had to un-freeze the piston, valves, springs and carb. I now have the motor running good (besides it burning oil) but i cannot get it to idel. I've adjusted the idle screw and the air screw on the carb but it wont idle good at all. When the motor is slowing down after a full throttle, it will just stall out. Any ideas? Its got a new air filter, coil and plug thats bout it...

Not having messed with the briggs engine much. I will offer a few things to look at.

If the carb has a float, check the level, look at the screen on the fuel inlet, it sounds like you are emptying the carb of fuel and there is nothing left for the idle. Does it idle when it is just started and sitting there running.

Did you rebuild the carb?

I did not rebuild the carb.

When the engine is cold, you gotta keep on the gas or it wont stand a chace at idling. it could be the fuel rod or the screen maybe, but it runs great at top end.

I would go get a $10 carb rebuild kit, couple cans of carb cleaner, a wire brush and a pipe cleaner. Take it apart clean everything, replace anything that is in the kit, run the pipe cleaner throug hthe jet several times and I'd say everything will be great after that.

I was a Briggs mech for a few years. Most likely the carb is shot.
Most carbs for these small engines use a ball bearing as a check valve to switch between the high and low fuel passages. More than likely that ball bearing is corroded and you will never be able to un-corrode it.

Can try a kit, but I would look at a new carb.

Sled...

I agree, a carb for it cannot be too expensive. Replace it, jet it, be done with it.

I had the same motor brigs 5hp on a go kart when I was a little kid. It ran great forabout a year then it started pooping.

Ended up is was the carb, carb's on them SUCK!

Now I am having problems with my Honda 2hp pressure washer, crazy! Found water in the oil and it wants to stutter when squeezing the trigger...
Did a little better after oil change but still has problems, I think it is running lean...
