rotisserie cooking on grill

Answer me this gents. We have a new grill it came with a rotisserie and i have a question. Does the spit rods connect together along with the prongs or does the spit rod stay apart and the forks (prongs) go into the meat?. If i try and connect the spit rods together then it is to short for the grill (its a 4 burner). so i am assuming they stay apart. I have never cooked rotisserie style but man i can't wait.

I've never seen a set-up where the spit is split...it's always been one long piece that passed thru the center line of the meat...I wouldn't trust just the forks holding anything larger than squirrel..

The one I use is more of a cage...works great and you don't have to try and pull out the spit when cooking is finished..
