For every scam artist, there is a gullible person waiting to be scammed.

Working in loss prevention at a bank, I can tell you that people fall for this everyday. If it isn't selling something on the net it's those stupid lottery scams where they send you a counterfeit check to pay the taxes on your "winnings". We also see work from home scams, lonely hearts scams, inheritance scams, and the classic 419 Nigerian scams. There is no shortage of victims here in the US and Nigerians are picking them off like fish in a barrel, they have even started immigrating (illegally) into Canada to do their dirty work in a safer environment.

Seriously, people get e-mail or faxes stating that a long lost relative whom they have never met or never heard of in a foreign country was tragically killed and has left their vast fortune to them, their only living relative. They arrange for the administrative fees and taxes to be financed by someone supposedly in the US who will send the funds to the victim by (counterfeit) check, which is to be cashed and sent via Western Union or Money Gram out of the country. By the time the check comes back, the money is long gone and the victim is on the hook for several thousand dollars. You would not believe the seemingly intelligent people who fall for this.
