Commercial Plates on Long Island
Commercial Plates on Long Island
I will be attending a Wedding on the East side of Long Island. My Scab has NY Commercial plates (live in Syracuse NY). Is there a problem driving on the Parkways with Commercial plates?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Yes. No parkways for commercial plates. Stay off the Northern and Southern State. You'll need to use the LIE. All the parkways are clearly marked "No commercial" traffic. So It shouldn't be to hard to avoid them. We've had a lot of trouble with tractor trailers getting jammed under the overpasses.
Edited to add:
If you use the HOV lane on the LIE... DON'T SPEED!!! Both counties are actively targeting HOV violations (crossing divider, using an "exit" as an entrance...) and speeding.

Thanks for the info!!
If I may pick your brain alittle more-
We're going to be staying in stony brook, wedding is in wading River what would you suggest as the best route from NY and between the 2 spots given the "commercial" issue?
Thanks for your help!

No problem...
LIE, to the William Floyd Parkway, exit 68 I think... (Yeah, I know, but commercial is ok) North. Take it to the end which is 25a, and take the fork to the right (east, stay in the right lane). You'll see signs telling you the road ends... Stay on 25a, it will take you through the town. Where in Wading River do you need to go? If you need Sound Ave. (if you're going where I think you are...) You'll see a Valero gas station... you'll make a left just past it. Watch your speed on the Floyd as well. The cops are out since the weather has been nice(r). Have a safe trip!

It looks like a nice place, too bad the rooms there are $300 a night!
Thanks again, we're not going till the end of July, but the commercial issue was a concern, sounds like we won't have any problems.

Here in CT they have been using what they call a combo plate for pick-ups. But because NY cops will stop and ticket them as commercial if found on a parkway, CT now allows passenger plates on pick-ups. You can read the registration rules for NY vehicles at their dmv web site.
I have New Jersey non commercial plates (regular)on my pickup. Can I go on the NYC parkways legally? Seems I get pulled over because I have a tool box across the bed, but I never get a ticket. Only a request to leave the parkway at the next exit (which I always do).

Just to avoid further confusion... On the Floyd you'll notice route 25... you want 25a. The Floyd dumps you out on 25a where it ends... go right (east).
Be sure to check out some of the vinyards while you're out here, if you have the time. Also, just past the reception hall, on Sound Ave., you have Lewin Farms on the right (fresh produce) and just past there is the Davis Peach Farm on the left. Both of these places are within a "healthy walk" or a very short drive from the hall. A decent place to grap some pub fare would be Phils' across the street from the King Kullen shoping center, and Hess Gas. Stay away from the McDs... worst one ever!
