Anyone Own a Pool Table?

Hi!

We have any pool junkies here?

My rec room is almost done (my winter project) and I've been thinking hard about getting a 4x8 table. Nothing fancy, just something you might find at your local bar.

According to what I've read online, it says in order to fit a 4x8 table, you need the following free space:
14' 4'' x 18'

My rec room is 12' 6'' x 36'.
So I'm fine on the 36', but I'm a tad short on the 14' 4'' requirement because I only have 12' 6''.

This makes me short about a foot on each side, going by the "guide I found online.
Sooo, Iwas wondering if I used one of those smaller cues they have for tight spaces, if that would ruin the enjoyment of the game, or do you think being short the foot on each side is enough of a hinderence to scrap the idea altogether?

I just don't want it to be like that episode of Seinfeld where Frank turns George's room into a "billiard room" and every time they take a shot, they break a window, LOL

Thanks

I grew up with a 4x8 table in the basement. We had to use a short cue and never had any problem. It doesn't get used all that much relatively, anyhoo.

Make sure you get slate, Habibi. Nothing else will do...

I definately agree on the slate thing - nothing else will do indeed. However, I personally hate using short cues. If I were you, I'd buy a smaller table instead. As for barroom tables, they are actually quite expensive. They are built to withstand the punishment that is meted out in the typical bar environment. That said, you can usually find used bar tables available for a good price, and have them resurfaced. Otherwise, check the ads for other used tables. They are like exercise machines - people buy them, use them for a while, and then they collect dust.

yeah, like they say...it will just collect dust.As far as room goes, unless you're used to playing league pool where you will need real life conditions, the 12'6 will be fine.

Bar tables are smaller.
If it was me I get a bar size table(7'). Even with that you'll need shorter (52") cue for 10 percent of your shots.

An 8 foot will make you a better player but, this is just for recreation right?
Once you get comfortable with a cue, it's a pain in the azz to keep switching to a much lighter cue everytime you turn around. It's like changing pitchers with bases loaded and a full count but, it's just for recreation, right?

Yeah, I'm a pool junkie.

That's exactly right Raoul, just to have some laughs and drink a few beers like we used to do 20 years ago.

I'll be honest, I suck at pool, and so does my wife, so my intent isnt to become a wc player and win a big tourney.

I still have the fancy *** cue I bought 24 years ago when I used to go to the pool hall. I loved the feeling of walking in with my $200 cue (back then), in it's fancy leather case. For a brief moment everyone would look at you and think "now that guy must be a frikkin good player"

Then I'd stand there like John Wayne, twisting all the peices together, like I was someone to be reckoned with.

... and 2 seconds later as soon as I made my first shot, the fantasy was over, because then they all knew I sucked, LOL - but I loved those few moments before they knew.

Since you have so much length in the room, could you put the table at just a little bit of a diagonal? This may cut down on some of the shots that would make you limited. I would have to see it to picture the way that it would look, and whether or not it would help, so just a thought.

Yeah, I'm a beer junkie.
Just like Raoul to weigh in on this one from size of a pitcher perspective.....

I have a 4X8 foot table and the guy that did the installation told me 14' 6" wide room was minimum for that size table. I think rail shots will be a problem in that size room with the 8 footer.

example: table 4 foot wide, centered in the room, leaves 4' 3" on each side, average stick is about 58". 4'3" comes to 51", a 6" cushion and frame on the table leaves about minus 1" for stroke room on a cushion shot. Get a short stick for the few cushion shots and you'll be fine, never notice it.
Another solution would be an indented chair rail about the height of the table all around the room, kinda double duty as a beer shelf.

Good to see you alive and well RR.. and yes, 1 inch slate is the ONLY way to go, and pay someone to set it up properly.

Sorry to hear that serotta.
That 1" stroke probably explains why you play a lot of pool.

(the election is 20 months away and everybody is already getting quoted out of context)

I didn't want Habibi to feel bad but, my rec room dimensions are 22x24'.
I have the 8 foot table.
I had so much room left over I opted for the optional 108 inch pool cues.
That's right, the cue sticks are 9 footers, I thought I was the coolest guy on the block for quite awhile.

Until one day my wife walked in and said,
"You idiot! Look what you're doing to the ceiling!"

I have a 7.5' foot table I got at Wal-Mart for $250. Now before you laugh... It looks great, sits nice and level, and has a 10 year warranty against warpage. After 10 years who the hell cares if it warps? I'll throw it out, because I only paid $250 for it.

Here's what it looks likes. Minus those gay kids.
