Speedometer

Hi everyone. I bought a 07 screw last week and tonight ,on my way home, I was pulled over by our State Police. I was told I was clocked doing 67 in a 55 MPH zone. I had my cruise set dead on 60 MPH. What are the odds a stock truck is off by this much ? Can a dealer check and verify the speedometers accuracy ? Thanks for the help.

You sure it was MPH and not KPH?

Use a hand held gps unit to verify it's off, then take it to the dealer and tell them.

I checked mine with GPS once (accurate to 0.1 kph). The speedometer was reading 2 mph faster in the 0-40 range and about 3 mph in 40-70 range. But I think this is just something The Man sticks us with cause I've seen that on at least 4 vehicles.

the stock speedo can be off by about +/- 3%
hold down the trip button as you turn the truck on- will make your dash go into diagnostic mode- push the trip button to eventually get to a digital speedo (monitored from the VSS -vehicle speed sensor-) drive so that the Needle says 60 mph, and reference the digital gauge to see what you're 'really' at...

the vss reads from the pcm calibration of what tire size was programmed in- sooo, if they are the stock tires, the VSS should be correct- if they are not stock tires, the vss will be off--the amount would most likely be minor, unless of course hes running 4-5 sizes under/over stock...

Thanks for the tips. I really appreciate it.I just got back from taking my truck out and checked my speed with the VSS and a GPS. with the cruise set at 60 MPH the VSS read 59.7 MPHand the GPS read 59.3 MPH. This must be why I only got a warning instead of a fine. I told him I would fight it and insisted I was doing 60 MPH. He then threatened to arrest me because I was arguing with him. Oh well. it's good to know that my speedometer is correct. Thanks for all the help. By the way, my local dealer has a town cop clock you with his radar gun to verify your speed.

I found out yesterday that my 03 is off more then i thought it was.... I drove about 6 miles distance (watching those mile markers) and only gained 5.5 miles on the odometer... And ive got stock tires... so my odometer is way under where it should be. ive gor 41k on the clock which if my math is correct that means i should be somewhere around 45k i think... Ill have to do more mileage testing with markers and what not to see whats up... Also means im getting better gas mileage then i think i am

Yea, don't argue with a Police Officer on the side of the road. Save the arguing for the Court Room. You will NEVER win arguing while on the side of the road. Well, I take that back. You might win a trip to the local jail.

Go to a major highway or interstate, they have the mile marked, run it up to 60 mph and look at your watch or use a stop watch. Then when you pass a mile marker..... Look at your clock or start the stop watch then when you pass the next marker look at watch or stop the stop watch. ( note alot of cell phones have stop watches).
At 60 mph it should take exactly 1 min to go 1 mile (IE marker to marker). If it takes longer, then however many second longer it takes thats how man yMPH you are traveling slower.... If it takes less, then however many seconds less it takes is how many MPH fatser you were traveling.

Nice tip on the dash diagnostic mode. I never knew that was accessible. What are all the other readouts it shows? The only one I recognize besides mph is rpm.
