Are you being monitored at work?

Hey Guys,

I was just watching a spy episode on tv and it touched on online monitoring. It was pretty interesting and creepy at the same time. I wonder if work knows that I spend considerable time looking at F150Online.

Questions:

Is your online activity being monitored at work?

What if you're not onsite at work, rather you're working on a different network and not VPN'd in? Say you're at Starbucks on the internet. Could they really see all the time you spend on F150Online.com?

Somewhere down the electronic 'line' so to speak, yes. Online activity can be monitored very intently.

While I can't speak for every corporate policy; I know that MANY companies continually monitor usage and connectivity -- for example, you connecting to the IP address that belongs to f150online.

General Electric has terminated individuals for 'goofing off' based on logs maintained by IT while logged in under their individual SSO.

Ours is while we're at work, but I work for a Government military contractor. Some people have been "walked out" for viewing inappropriate material.

That's well known, and effed up at the same time...

I bet I've been logged into F150 about 4-5 years now.

I pull it up in the mornings, like any other work-window, and I pop in periodically to see what's going on.

When I worked at my old job, security was tight, or so we thought. One dude got a nasty gram from IT Security for going on a bikini web site, but- I've seen guys looking at straight-up, penetration ****, at work, cream pies and everything, and they never heard a word from security. What's worse, our control room was laid out like NASA, so anyone looking in that direction could see what they were doing, and thee were women no more than 4-5 feet away from him...

Ballsy...

Stupid, but ballsy...

At my new job, some joker got nailed for file sharing. Uploading and downloading videos through the LAN.
A joker at the old job got nailed for the same thing. On-site clients had been complaining of slow response, so we inserted a sniffer to monitor bandwidth utilization. Found a guy's IP address on a 64K segment (Would you believe people try to run a business on 64K - 256K, with 9 - 10 users?), downloading music.

I have more bandwidth than that in my house, with 2 users.

If your IT guy is worth anything the answer is yes.

I can tell exactly who went where and when. I'm not saying I actively watch and ooo and ahhh at what is happening but I could.

In fact all emails and their content are tracked as well.

Don't do or say anything on the web through work that you don't want well known.

Your home activity is tracked as well but by the ISP.

A guy I used to work with is an IT security guy at my current job, he invited me down to see what he does (This was after he took control of my PC, and left me a message). Probably 2-3,000 work at my site.

He sees folks paying bills online from work, yahoo messenger (before they blocked it), etc... they see it all. And they can see your desktop, if they want to.

He told me they don't investigate a user unless someone hits a site that sets off red flags. They monitor for red flags then take action. Three guys can't effectively monitor the action of 3,000 (or more) users. Go somewhere stupid though, and they've got you.

Yeah but that's monitoring while they're on the work network. But what if you're not on your work network and not VPN'd in? How in the world can they still see your traffic?

I guess I don't spend a ton of time on here and you could have the browser open but not really be reading it and working on something else.

Thanks for the info everyone! The company they showed on the show was crazy. I mean they tracked everything. Down to the hours with a browser open that didn't relate to their job and tracked it as "unproductive time". Hit a certain amount of it and you started getting in trouble and on management's "list". I could only imagine what would happen to an employee their who tried an inappropriate site or something.

Well if you are at home or not on their network then their tools won't be able to track you. Feel free to download your freaky **** at home.

Besides being tracked on here, I work in a large chemical plant and we have cameras all over the place. Not so much for tracking individuals but I know they do at times. There are some building that have cameras on the production floor to monitor for spills and such so they say.
I also have to log and date all work I do for future references and such.
So yes I am being tracked more than I care to be.

Hope they dont read this.

Sled...

Think about it, unless you work from home, what else do you REALLY need high-speed bandwidth for?

There aren't that many recipes and maps we need to down load... We're downloading ***!

I was telling one of my co workers just how much we are monitored and he couldn't believe it.

I pointed out that we have security cards that log in when we go in the building and out. The IT people can show times of log in and out to the server and any work done on the computer. (All temp Internet files are kept on a seperate server. )

Any calls made from out phones at our desk.

We have fuel cards that leave a record of when and where fuel is bought.

We have company cell phones that have a record of all calls made. Plus GPS tracking. (If you have a Sprint phone you can go to the website and activate GPS tracking on your phones for a monthly fee.)

Yep, we are monitored alot more than most realize. But as stated before, unless something is flagged, just to many people to be watching everything, all day, everyday.

Most rental cars now have GPS tracking.

If you live in a large city that has intersection cameras, you can be watched from intersection to intersection, then monitored when you go into Wal-Mart.

Most large retail stores have pretty good equipment and plenty of it, so you could be videoed throughout the store, and out again. Of course a record and video of your purchase is on file.

So, just smile and wave boys, just smile and wave.:santa:
