Help Needed: Things to Do in Cary, NC?
Help Needed: Things to Do in Cary, NC?
Hey Guys,
So I'll be leaving San Diego on Saturday (got here this past Friday from La Crosse, WI), and going to Cary, NC for work.
My question is this. What fun things can be found in Cary, NC? Just looking for fun things to do after work during the week.
Thanks for the tips!

I came 'this" close to moving to Cary when my department shut down...
Thankfully, I found another gig locally...
Nothing against North-Click, but, I LOVE Dallas, and Texas.

As it should be. If I didn't have 11 years in with the same company, and make 3 times the average local wage, I'd be on my way back to TX/LA myself. At 40+ years old, you don't walk away from any kind of seniority. North Carolina is the suck.
Cary ranked 5th by Money magazine in 2006.

Only town in the South to hit the top thirty.

My suggestion -- find a sale on beer and enjoy your hotel room. I've been there and don't really have any intentions on going back.
If you can get tickets to a Carolina Hurricanes hockey game, you should. They play on the NC State campus in Raleigh, very close to Cary.
There is a good natural history museum in downtown Raleigh. There are lots of parks in and near Cary where you can get some local history. One that I like is Yates Mill, in Garner (just east of Cary).
Cary, Raleigh, Durham and Wake Forest all just run together. Cary is an affluent suburb of Raleigh. Prices on food and real estate are high for North Carolina, but not as bad as California!
The Raleigh area is a major NCAA basketball hotbed, so if you are there during the tournament, any local sports bar should be hopping if there is a game on.
If you are a railroad buff, the North Carolina Transportation Museum is in Spenser, about 1.5 hours drive SW of Cary.
Furniture in North Carolina is CHEAP. The main areas to order and purchase furniture are at least 1 hour west of Cary. If you are in the market for furniture, you can almost certainly have it made and shipped to you from NC cheaper than buying it near your home.

Hey Fellas!
Well thank you all very much for the info; it was all interesting and insightful. It sounds like I better have all my fun in San Diego.
Today I went to Torry Pines (I believe that is the spelling, but forget at the moment), and then walked the caves down in La Jola. That was followed with a great (and expensive) lunch over looking the Pacific. Then a kayak rental in the pacific of the coast of La Jola, where I saw a whale (200 yards from my kayak), sea lion and seal (both within three feet of my kayak), dolphins (jumping past my kayak within 5 feet), some fish that is supposeably the "California" fish, and then went through the caves.
Today was definitely a cool day. Tomorrow will be spent lounging on some beach, though I'm not sure where. Wednesday will be spent north in the Vineyards. Then we'll see what happens later on in the week.
Oh today had a cool close! We watched the sun set on the beach in Lo Jola. Then driving home we drove past and I pretended not to look, when we saw a girl doing a photo shoot topless next to some car. Needless to say she was well "augmented".
Thanks for the news on Cary. It sounds like a case of beer is in order and I'll have to enjoy my hotel. I was going with the Marriott Townplace in order to build up my Marriott points. However, it isn't as nice as the Hilton. If I'm going to be chilling in a hotel after work all week then I might go with the Hilton.
The only problem is a case of beer was in order in La Crosse last week. Needless to say that led to some very late nights with friends and one long day Friday as I drove 2 hours back to Minneapolis, unpacked, then repacked and headed to the airport for San Diego.
Sounds like I'll hunt some "cool and interesting" historical places to check out or a park in Cary for afterwork fun. Then hit up some fun college places to eat after work. Afterall, I'm not old but I'm not young. Just have to find that "reasonable" fun that doesn't get you too tired or in trouble.
Thanks again fellas,
Duke
PS. If you're interested and this thread has a following, I'll update my travel excitement for this week and next.

Cary is not that bad, If your looking to grab a couple beers with a fellow F150 onliner send me a PM.
Dude, Duke we oughtta get together for a beer! I'm in Raleigh, just 10 minutes down the road! I'm sure jdoggfx4 and I could find you some decent places to check out...
What kind of work are you going to be doing?
- NCSU
Oh yeah, if you like beer there's a place down town that carries 80-90 beers on tap and another 100+ in the bottle....

Will do fellas.
I'll be in town consulting for a client of mine for the week. It's going to be a crazy busy schedule as I have a lot to finish in a short amount of time. But I'll know more on Monday as to what the week's schedule will entail. Maybe we can get together on Wed or Thur and meet up for drinks.
Drop me an email with your name and number and I'll be able to give you a call, or I'll drop you an email on Monday to see what your schedules look like for Wed and Thur.
I'll have patchy internet the rest of this week as I'll be pretty busy in San Diego.
Talk to ya later,
Duke
