Need printer help

About 2 years ago my cannon printer broke and i made do without one.

Well, now i just bought a new HP Deskjet D4160 but i cannot install it.

Using the disk that came with the printer, i get a message " RPC server is unavailable" or if i go in the control panel and add printer, i get a message " Operation could not be completed. The print spooler is not running"

i have tried http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314876 but this didn't work.

Honestly, how f'in hard is it to install a printer.

I did shut off tall the AVG programs first.

Try going to control panel>administrative tools>Services, then disable any services that are related to your old canon, then restart (printer disconnected), then go back into services, and re-enable your print spooler... see if that works.

Printer drivers dont always do a full uninstall. I had an old POS lexmark, and even though I uninstalled the software, it left its services running, which disable the default windows print services.

Even if the Canon did do a full uninstall, you should check the status of your print services, to ensure that they are on AUTO

Find the print spooler service again, right click on it, click the dependencies tab, and make sure nothing other than RPC services is there. Then do the same for RPC services. That may or may not have to do with the problem starting the service.

the spooler has the RPC and the RPC has no dependencies. the RPC locater has Workstation as a dependency.

I have been messing with this for a while and I'm getting nowhere.

HP was worthless with there help.

this is the message I'm getting when loading the installation disk.

i finally got it to work by reloading it with the back up disk for XP.

Now i can only get online through MSN which is very slow and keeps locking up
. I'm hoping after i get the service pack 2 and the other update i can use IE7 again. when i use IE7 i get a message saying "the procedure entry point SHRegGETVALIEW could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll"

i finally managed to get everything fixed.

After the reinstall i downloaded most of the Microsoft updates and then i had to reinstall IE7 and then the rest of the updates. My sound didn't work so after reinstalling the software for it, i all seems to be working again.

This all started with the "print spooler" file going missing. how could of this happened. did i get a virus at some point?

Anywho, i hate trying to fix computers because i don't really understand them. I'll prefer to stick with engines and trucks.

EDIT: i really like the printer, it prints clear and fast.
