Cool Insurance Question

Hi folks,

I have two vehicles, a 97 f150, and a 98 oldsmobile. Both paid for, I'm the only person with access to them (no roomate, or GF).

When I do quotes online, it seems to just about double what my rate would be if i only had one vehicle. It seems illogical that they should charge ~90% more for owning two vehicles, when it's the same driver. There are no additional miles or risk from owning two vechicles by one person.

I originally bought the car for an old GF, but that falling through, i kept it for the gas mileage and comfort. I keep the truck for camping, moving, all that fun stuff.

Question is.....
Is anyone in the same situation... is there a way to reduce the additional cost of one vehicle to something minimal like around 10%?

Is there some rare type of insurance that I would benefit from?

Is there auto insurance that you could purchase centered on YOU not the cars you own? (does that make sense?)

Thanks,

-Nate

Since they are close to 10 years old, what I would do is carry liability only on the them. I always drop comprehensive when a vehicle gets that old as the premium becomes a high percentage of what you would get as settlemment. Also, you need to make sure the insurance company knows there is only one driver. Otherwise, they will assume two drivers, and both vehicles could be on the road at the same time.

Online quotes suck. Call your local folks and wheel 'n deal. The web is nice for some things, but talking to a human and beating down the price is how you save the cheddah.

Ditto on the local agent. I have had an independent agent in the past who actually would shop around every year for lower rates.

Yeh well my local agent stuck it to me hard after being with them for over 10 years. When I sat in his office he told me it was going up again next year. I spent 15 minutes online and saved $400. Online quotes rock

To find these golden local agents, what's the best route to take? Yellow pages? I live in austin, tx. If any one knows of a good one here I would love to get their contact info.

#1---talk to your friends---see what they use, and call their agents.

#2--- call a variety of agents around you. Be straight up with them---who you are currently with, what type of coverage you have, etc.

Geico is good, Progressive I hear is good, I have Allstate and the rates (as well as the service have been damn good. (My 18 year-old had a small accident this past summer.)

More and more insurance companies are using your credit score to help determine your rates---check your credit scores for any discrepancies(sp?). They have determined that one's credi history and one's driving history correspond. I know that a great many insurance compnaies, (All State, State Farm, and Nationwide) are now using these scores.

my 99 f150 and my 92 stang are both fully insured and payed off.
i get a multi car discount for having two vehicles and being the only driver.
On the stang i get a good discount for low mileage, i had it at 5k per year but dropped it to 1k per year.
the only reason i have full coverage is because my insurance is so cheap. if it cost more i would drop it on the stang and maybe even the truck.

i was kind of in a rush to do it before the 24th, but went ahead and went with geico, saved about 30%, not too shabby, i'll keep my eyes open for a better deal, but this is much better than before.
