Vegetative state

Last night my wife and I were sitting in the living room and I said to her. “I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependent on some machine and fluids from a bottle, If that ever happens, just pull the plug.”

She got up, unplugged the TV and then threw out my beer.

Maybe you should get together with my wife -- only her beverage of choice would be Caffeine Free Diet Coke instead of beer. I swear -- if my wife's eyes are open, the television is on......

My dad was in a vegetative state for approximately one month before he passed away. Real funny, not.

I would say comparing losing your grandmother to losing your father is not exactly apples to apples. Not to mention that it just happened about 2 months ago.

The joke is not that funny anyway.

Whatever, you don't know my family history and let's not get into a pissing match over this, not well worth it. Funny joke to me and not you, big deal.

While I can't imagine your loss and the grief associated, I know I will likely have to go through it sometime but havent yet. I realise you had a really rough choice to make on the subject, and probably lost alot of sleep over wether to make the decision either to or not to. I hope I am never put in that situation. I know my dad would want us to pull the plug, but I'd have a hard time giving the OK. I'd rather spend every last dime I had and sell everything I own including my own house and live in a cardboard box just for the chance of one more day, the hope that I'd have one more chance to tell him how I feel.

However, the joke is not about pulling the plug on your family.
It's about us taking life for granted.
The situation presented is about what you would want to have done if it where you..... The Joke of it is that the wife did not see any difference in life support with no responce vs his current state of sitting in front of the TV with a beer and she is not able to get a responce.

We all take life for granted, I'd put money down that if we asked your loved ones, then you too have been caught up in a TV show, game, raceing, internet, work or something and been non responsive to your loved ones, (wife and kids if applicable) several times even in the short time since the misfortune with your dad.

The subject matter may be serious but like all jokes the way it is presented is. The funniest jokes are the ones from real life situations.

I did not have to pull the plug on my father. He died on his own, with me by his side.

I understand the joke. I just didn't think that it was hilarious. Funny, maybe... hilarious, no.

I apologize for still being sensitive about the death of my father. I probably should not have replied to the thread in the first place.

No need to apologize, you will always be sensitive when ever anything reminds you of him from now on. They say it gets easier with time, I dont think so. Non of my loses so far have gotten any easier...... last one has been 4 years..... Still hurts when I think about it.
