Vista on my network

Does anyone know if I am going to have any trouble getting a Vista machine to run on my wireless network. Right now there are 4 machines running XP and one running 2000 Pro. I keep hearing about all these compatability issues with Vista, but I don't want to special order a PC with XP on it for one of the kids. I would like to see what Vista is all about anyway.

I have my network setup with one Vista machine and two XPs, no problems. I set up the Vista first and saved all the network info onto a USB drives and then set up the XP machines. Piece of cake.

I'll wait....

I hate changes though, I was running 98se until just a couple years ago and switched to XP pro. There are times I still miss my 98. everytime there is an issue or somethign I want to do and it's not where it's suppose to be and I have to go google for the answer.

2000 pro is actually a pretty stable OS. My two older boys beat the snot out that PC and it never locks up unless they try to play a game that is beyond the limits of the old 450Mhz pentium 128MB RAM. It is a slow *** system but it gets the job done for them.

Vista will run fine on a wireless network with other OS's and I am finding it just as stable W2K was.

Can anyone tell me what hoop to jump through to get Vista and XP to recognize each other on a network? I could create a wireless network with Vista, join it with XP, but never was able to see anything on the other computer.

I'm trying to dump all the wife's stuff from her old XP laptop to her new Vista laptop. I had no luck with ethernet or wireless last night, but then I'm no networking guy either...

BTW, I'm also tired of "did you start this command? click continue to continue" or something along those lines...

I didn't work at it too long, finally gave up...

as a heads up and you try and order a new pc, neither Dell nor HP will make you a pc with XP on it- unless you want to a straight DOS frame and a stack of all the hardware install cd's, OS cd, etc....or a Dell XPS 710 desktop
I spent 3 hrs on the phone telling them what absolute morons they were for not allowing choice of OS only 3 days after the retail release of Vista.

Are you sharing any folder or drive on the vista computer. If not then it wont show up on any other computer. Also make sure that File sharing is enabled.

I have added a new computer, went to another one that was already on the workgroup and wondered why I wasnt seeing the new one yet, only to find out I wasnt sharing anything yet. LOL

I swear I went thru all 7 continents of order processing customer support workers, and eventually got to the production line manager in Texas, whom I first thanked for speaking english and chucking the **cking response manual- and then proceeded to go into the whole spiel that you are working on. I told him that two days ago every pc had XP [as I bought my pc right after the vista release], so why not just put it on there and make the pc the "customer" wants...
sure you can get one thats already pre-made, but you cannot order a new pc with xp as the operating system-by phone or internet. the answer was "Dell is on the leading edge of technology, and we strive to supply the newest, and most advanced systems to our customers, so as of [vista release date] all computers will have Vista Home or Vista Business" i was ticked- the only way they would let you do XP was to either buy the XPS 710 (which I did), the top of the line small business pc, (these two computers are multi-graphics card capable as well as 64 bit capable- and do not fully support Vista yet), or to buy a full retail XP and order the pc non-installed- all hardware installed but no configuration/software & drivers loaded.

Yep, had sharing turned on, permissions set, created a shared folder on each computer, turned off firewalls and nothing. Finally gave up, and just transferred stuff using a 1gig SD card.

Gateway will still make you a computer with XP, on the FX530, or DX420
I think they are the only one who will

I am about to by a new computer, and think I will do the Gateay, just to stay with XP

I have played around with Vista on a few machines, and am not impressed
