Question for RockPick.......

Hi RP,
I have a question about water composition. Besides just H2O their is a myriad of minerals and isotopes that naturally occur.

The one I have question about is the hydrogen isotope called deuterium. I know it is one component for a hydrogen bomb and can be found by the truck load in heavy water. (had to relate it to this truck site)

My question is about how much deuterium is found typically in natural water? I have searched and searched so much that I am nearly an honorary Hydrologist but I can't find the answer.

My wife has just become an unsuspecting co-owner of many patents and a company that produces deuterium depleted water. Don't ask how, it is quite convoluted and I am not trying advertise anything here.

I want to know the amount of depletion they claim. I know it may be a "snake oil" type product but WTH it may make some side cash for new truck mods. It is FDA approved as a food supplement so it's safe.

Any information or websites would help.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Deuterium has a natural abundance of 0.015%. So, the occurrence in natural water should be quite small, probably much less than 1%. I find it quite laughable that he FDA would actually approve this kind of thing. Then again, it is the government we are talking about.

Story time. About two years ago, I got a bottle of D20 from work, and proceeded to freeze some of it. I had a party about 3 days later, and the look on people's faces when the ice sank was priceless!

Hey BigTRQ,
So you are saying about 150 ppm in nature? Would water contain more?

D2O is what they call this stuff. I am going to freeze some right now to do the same thing.

Thanks for the info!!!

So deuterium has a 0.015% natural abundance, so if you had 100 atoms of hydrogen, then up to 0.00015 of them could be deuterium.

Totally missed this post... sorry.

I'd be totally lying to tell you that I'm well versed in this but, I will do a little bit of research on it to see what I can figure out...

We have a very good library at the office with oodles of water quality/groundwater/water chemistry books that may yield some information...

I'll be in touch...
