Laptop Question

Not another what laptop should I buy thread. My desktop just hit it's 4th birthday and it's defintly not what it used to be. I'm debating replacing it with a second laptop.

My question to those of you Techs or laptop users is, I leave me desktop on 24/7 365. If I start using a laptop should I expect problems by leaving it on 24/7? Do any laptop users out there leave yours on 24/7 and if so how long have you had it and what if any problems has it caused?

Any information is appericated.

I bought a used one from a friend as a favor to him a few years ago.
He was in school and left his in his room on his desk open and running 24/7. problems... screen went out after 2 years. Battery went bad sometime in that time but he dont know when cause it was always plugged in. Do not leave it plugged in!!!! You want to drain the battery every couple of days.
I bought a replacement battery but it didn't fix it, I think he fried the chargeing contacts or leads inside..... after that I didnt mess with trying to fix the screen cause it wasnt worth it. My daughter is now using it in her room, hooked up to a regualr monitor. Has to be plugged in anyway so not a big deal.

alot of newer lapotps have a power cut-off to the battery when its fully charged so that it doesn't age/damage the battery prematurely... i left my laptop on most of the time for about 3 yrs, battery still would last a good 2 hrs before it would die...

Google for

Caring for a Li-Ion battery

If you have a laptop already, read the manual

I dont know of a laptop that doesnt quit charging, even the very first 1970's Grid Systems Inc. laptops had auto cycleing.....

Having a Li-Ion battery at full charge all the time is one of the worst things you can do for the battery.

Heat is it's second enemy, I dont know of a laptop that is known for being cool while running.....

I also leave mine plugged in almost 24/7 and have done so forever. The battery doesn't have a very long life, but I don't expect it to. I never use it for travel so it doesn't have to have an extended battery life.
