Schottenheimer fired by Chargers president
Only way a coach and team can be successful is to not have to worry about their jobs. If the coach knows that he can take chances and not have to worry about some dumbass owner or gm looking over his shoulder they will have a winner.

In recent history, the only team to come close was the Chicago Bears in 1985, as they went 15 - 1. I think Indy got close a few years ago, either 15 - 1 or 14 - 2.
This was personal...
Someone was saying San Diego was gonna be a contender for years to come...
With the loss of their offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, and head coach, it will certainly be an uphill struggle.

Must've been that year Randall Cunningham and Randy Moss were lighting everyone on fire, then got their butts kicked by Atlanta in the playoffs.
Circa 1998.
As a former Div 1 ref---any coach in a big time program will tell you that it is one of the rare jobs where, when you get hired, you expect to get fired. Schotts was a good man, though, and I would bring him back to Clevleand right now.

Only the Steelers' owners have stuck with their head coach through thick and thin. January 1969 to December 2006 only one coaching change.
The Jerry Jones win now and do it my way, will hopefully be a short history of the NFL. Of course I live in Atlanta, where we have had 14 Head coaches since 1966... At least the Smiths are gone.. but Mr Home Depot does not seem to be doing good with his coaching decisions.
He has had four head coaches in his short tenure as owner.
Things to think about ... Arthur Blank fires Dan Reeves (longest coach ever with Atlanta at 6 years) the second year of ownership to be replaced for the remander of 2003 by Wade Phillips (hired recently to be another one of Jones' puppets). Mr HD then hires Jim Mora?!?!? What the ???? did Mora ever do to make anyone think he could be a great head coach? So he fires Mora this year to bring in a hot College coach the same week Saban jumps ship in Miami, because he could not handle the big league. I guess these owners did not learn anything from the great Spurrier debacle???
I am becoming more of a Pittsburgh fan every year...
