If you are above a basic user then they are useless...

If not they can help

I took a class on Microsoft Excel, and let me tell you- I had no idea Excel could do all it can do...

Makes me look like I really know what I'm doing here... I took another that was an MS Office overview. That got me some training on PowerPoint, which is good as well; but I don't know it as well as I know Excel, but well enough to put together some very nice presentations.

Microsoft Access is supposed to be an even more powerful spreadsheet application than Excel, but excel is good enouh for me. It was a high level course, and we were only on Access for about 2-3 days. That was enough for me.

I've been thinking about getting it for my Mom & Mother in law (Video Professor); but anyone working in an office today, probably knows more than Video Professor will be teaching on those free discs.

My dad ordered it (Dad is 87). I took a look in the box and read the literature that came with it. Something about ok to open an view one but if you keep the set it costs something like $80.00. I called and after a talking to a fast talker got a return authorization and we sent the whole mess back. But I think dad lost his initial postage.

Around this place (my company) people use access as a spreadsheet.

I mentioned relational database and tables and their eyes glazed over....

"Never mind.... Go on."

If I saw my users trying to use Access as a number cruncher I'd smash their PC into pieces right in front of them.

"You know you don't have to keep entering the same information over and over"

"just create another table and link it to the...uh..the..."

Hahahahaha-

Well, it's a spreadsheet "database" here too.

One of out "Databases" was Excel first, then some wise-apple put it in Access. It's still a spreadsheet to me, I see no real reason to use it over Excel... Not for what we do anyway (Which is store customer info, circuit ID's, etc...)

I need to learn how to use Visio, other than being able to open it, and look at other folks schematics and illustrations.

I can see that becoming a very important software rung on my journey toward PMP.

Using Access as a spreadsheet is much better than using Excel as a database. Nothing like trying to troubleshoot a 2gb shared workbook.

Go to any search engine like Yahoo or something and type in

"Video Professor scam"

And you will learn what you need to know.

It seems like a nice sales speil, and he looks like he's your bestest friend, but from what I read it seems like they get you to order the first one cheap, then keep charging and sending more at not so cheap and you never can get it stopped, and they do that on purpose.

Great customer service the FIRST time, then once they hook you and reel you in...

"Caveat Emptor" - let the buyer beware.

A fool and his money are soon parted...
