you may want to look in to the fax over the internet. i have never used them but to save $125 i would try it. that is more money you can spend on the truck
or if you have a printer/scanner (all in one) it is not that hard to set up. you can get free to try software on the internet if you dont like it you ain't out no money. you may want to try here.

I am kinda looking too,

I have gotten tired of all those 3-4-5 in one machines that when one function stops working, so do the rest of them so nothing works.

Most dependable fax I have is to switch my PC over to dial-up and use the fax function on the PC. I store everything there anyway, can store and print easily, and when I need to copy something into the PC I have my trusty scanner.

I just purchased an HP 5610 at Wal-Mart for around $125.00. It is a fax/copier/printer combination, and so far I have been very pleased with it. The aspect I liked best about this machine was that it has a really "solid" copier function, which is of great help to me since I office out of my home. I hadn't purchased a new machine in quite a few years (I had and old DeskJet model) so I was surprised by how much better (and cheaper) the products have gotten over the years!

You're sitting in front of a fax machine you already own... sure it's not as convenient as a simple standalone fax, but it works about as well. Just need the software and a simple flatbed scanner and you're good to go!

Not too many "personal" class standalone fax machines around any more. We've been selling HP Officejet all-in-ones for that use. The 5610 mentioned is a good cheapie. You get the printer function and the flatbed capability for very little more cost than that 1040 standalone. Not only that, it does color - if you care. Beats going down to Kinko's and paying close to a buck for a color copy.

I got this Brother MFC-420cn, 6 in 1 multi function machine for $99 a year ago and have loved it.

Built in print server ready for network, or 2.0 USB hook up, fax, copy, scanner, media card reader... with a router it can be used by any computer in your home or office connected to your network. One of the best parts is it is like the older Canons, it has 4 seperate ink cartridges, one for each color, and are only $5 each. I've replaced each one ONCE over the course of the last year and I print ALOT and a lot of full page saturation ad proofs. I did not count the actuall yeild but I am more than impressed with it for a bubble jet.

If you care to explore your options for faxing from your computer, Windows XP Pro already has the fax software you need. It usually just needs to be installed via Add/Remove Programs - Windows Components. I always thought XP Home didn't come with it but it's included on the Home version on my laptop. If you go that route, you'll also need a fax modem in your machine. The XP fax software works pretty good. If you're faxing a document that's already on your computer there's no need to scan, you just "print to fax".
You could also try something like efax http://home.efax.com/ if you don't have a modem available.
