Band of Brothers
Band of Brothers
I didn't watch this when it was on HBO (Except for a piece of one episode), but I see now its popping up on the History channel, and othes. I watched the beginning and the end of a marathon, and it seemed to be pretty good.
I saw the episode where Lt. David Schwimmer, couldn't read a map, and kept getting his patrol lost in practice, and they guys imitated the voice of one of his Sr. Oficers, and scared the crap out of him, making him cut the fence, and let all those cows out.
Best Buy had the box set for $99.00. I'm just wondering is it that good.
Would you guys considering owning the box set?

I have the box set... it is the only series that I can watch over and over again... yes it's that good. I've had the set for about 3 years now, and have gone through the series about 4 or 5 times. I'm the kind of guy that cant watch a movie more than once, but this is the exception to the rule.

I still haven't seen Letters from Iwo Jima yet.
It is damn good. Read the book though, as well. Excellent book by a great author; he also wrote Citizen Soldiers, D-Day, and others.

Although I give him major credit for leading by example in that fight, that was the only face to face fight he was in (Although that's more than enough, and more of a fight than I ever wish to be in). Kinda takes a little bit away from the persona as it was presented in the movie. That guy was a leader, but he was crazy as Hell. Standing up in a fire fight, experimental parachutes, rank on his helmet, etc..
He was promoted to Full-Bird Colonel shortly after that, and Full Chickens don't do that kind of work... Actually, I was surprised to see him as a light Colonel out there. Especially when there were no Major's around either... What happened to the majors? Ranks just jumped from Captains to Lieutenant Colonels? Where are the majors?
If I'm an LTC, and I have to go... Everybody under me is going too!

WHat else they didn't go into, was the men that bolstered the 7th Cavalry for that final assault against the NVA, (5th Cavalry) moved through the elephant gras on their way to another LZ, and were ambushed by the NVA.
90% of the releiving unit was killed... Man, I can't even imagine going through something like that. The more I read, the prouder I became of our Vietnam vets... They weren't all whiny cry-baby guys as they were portrayed in "Casualties of War, Platoon, and to a lesser extent, Full Metal Jacket"
A lot of those men and a lot of those units had class.
I was glad to see CSM Plumley survived too. They didn't tell that at the end of the movie, but I found out later via internet research.
SGT Savage: Good day Sergeant Major!
CSM Plumley: How do you know what kinda got-damn day it is?
--------------------------------
SGT Savage: Beautiful day Sergeant Major!
CSM Plumley: What are you a f**king weatherman now?
A guy like that has to live!

I think it had to do with the times...
THe US was very much anti-war. All about peace & love on one hand, and battling the Civil rights movement on the other. Very much a conflicted state of being.
Women are usually anti-war, especially when they're losing husbands, brothers and sons on what seem like an insignificant piece of real estate. Men 19 - 26 were scared of the draft, so they were anti-war too, those who weren't quickly shuffled off to college (Which could get you out of the draft- and why my woodworking teacher said he went to school- didn't want to go to war).
Right now, the country is 50/50. Half support the war, half don't. But, I think the big difference here is, America, in most cases, still supports the soldier. Even if they don't support the administration's reasons or the ideals behind which they are fighting for.
From what I've seen is nothing but the utmost respect for soldiers. I see people go out of their way to shake a soldiers hand when they see them walking through the airport, still in uniform...
Moore: Round trip by chopper's thirty minutes. That means the first sixty men on the ground wil be there a half hour alone. Son of a bitch. Think maybe you ought ta get yourself that M-16?
Plumley: Time comes I need one, sir, there'll be plenty of 'em lying on the ground.
One of my favorite movie quotes!

Definitely worth the cash. I bought it the day it was released. Back in 1996, I was a SrA stationed at Ramstein AB, GE. There was a book signing at the BX. There was this guy named Richard Winters signing books. I had no idea who he was but shook his hand and listened to him for a few minutes. I thought he was a nice guy with a great story to tell. Easy Company? Band Of Brothers? What was this guy talking about? Imagine my suprise when almost 10 years later they release this series. I was in the company of greatness & didn't know it. I should have bought his book back then. I will regret not doing so for the rest of my days.

I did, however buy a Bossons head when I was stationed in the UK. The head was modeled after USAF Pilot Lt. Russell Gill, who flew in the Gulf. I had the opportunity to meet him and have him sign the head for me. It's not worth a lot of money or anything, but I don't plan on selling it either. It was just nice to see something like this done from a British sculpter to honor an American Pilot.
Here's a picture of the head
