Any tips on picking a good puppy??

Well, I just got back from seeing the puppies again, they are 4 weeks old now. There are 6 males and 1 female, they are 1/2 Wiemaraner and 1/2 Lab. We kinda want to get the female because she just seems so calm. We have seen them 3 times now, when they where 1 week, 2 weeks and now at 4 weeks. When they were 2 weeks and if you would pick one of them up it would whine, actually they all whined except 2 of them, the female and the one male that is almost twice the size of all the others. And even now at 4 weeks when you pick her up she doesn't whine or anything and just seems to be very relaxed as she has been evertime we have seen them.

So are there any little tricks to kinda test thier personalitys alittle bit?

Here is a picture of her at 1 week old

2 weeks old

4 weeks old

I always pick the runt of the litter. It's always worked out for me. I've never had a bad dog, or an unhealthy one.

Thats is adorable.
Whatever one you choose will love you and you will love it. i don't think you can go wrong with labs and their temperament.

I think male dogs are much more attractive. They tend to have more squared off faces, and just look picture perfect. Female dogs are usually very bland.

I prefer male dogs myself... I should go snag a pic of my black lab, my god he's cute.

I always let them have one litter before fixing them. Having pitbulls, it tends to mellow them out a little. You can see a big difference in their behavior after having puppies. All my girls have been a little hyper prior to having pups.

I always go with males. My black lab I have now was the runt of the litter, he was PUNY, now he is the biggest one the people I got him from say. He is easily the biggest black lab Ive seen.
He was pretty calm when he was first born, but after a few weeks he started getty fiesty. He is still pretty active and crazy.

It sounds like you already have a little bit of an attachment to the lil female though; I would just go with that one.

Thanks for the replys so far!! The reason that I kinda want to get the little girl is that I grew up having either pure breed Labs or lab/golden retervier mix. We had 2 males and 2 females. And the males just seemed to be dumber than a box of rocks, for the most part. I know that they all aren't like that, but ours were. Dont get me wrong they were very nice and loyal dogs, and I wouldn't have traded growing up with them for anything. Plus our females were a little more calm than the males where, even after getting them fixed. And our females were always smaller than the males were. Since this dog is a Wiemer/Lab mix, I am in a way alittle scared to see how big these dogs are going to get, the height of a Wiemer and build of a Lab . I may need to build a garage just for the dog.

As for getting the runt of the litter, there really wasn't one. 6 of the 7 were all about the same size, but the 7th one, he is a big boy. I should have gotten a pic of him next to the others, just by picking them up I would guess that he weighs about 2 lbs more than any of the others.

Keep the replys coming!!

Me too. Two Chesapeake Bay Retrievers (at different times), both the runt of the litter. Both females too.

Adorable pup BTW.

Well you already have pictures, and have been back a number of times to look at her. I think you better get her. If you don't, you'll be kicking yourself later and always questioning your decision.

All puppies are a handful. I've been thru quit a few of them. My female Black lab was a little tough to "potty" train but once she figured out she had to run to the door and bark once and I would let her out, she was all good after that. Calm as could be and really loveable. My Male Yellow Lab I have now was a basket case for the first 4 weeks I had him. I got him and his brother when they were both 6 months old. They were from a breeded and for whatever reason didn't sell. After a month of them ripping my back yard apart Hunter moved to Connecticut since I gave him to my nephew for his 1st birthday. He has turned out to be a great dog, very loveable and awesome with the kids. Caine (my dog) also turned out to be a great dog. Once Hunter left, Caine settled down in about 2 weeks and has been pretty chilled out ever since. He to, is great with people and little kids and loves to be with everyone.

I just recently got my mom a new puppy. A male C o c k e r Spaniel. When I went to the breeder to look at him he was in a pen with 2 others. The other 2 were jumping all over the place, barking and fighting as this little guy layed all calm and quiet in the back. So I asked the girl if I could see him. I picked him up and he licked my face and layed his head on my shoulder as to say...please take me with you..Obviously, I took him home to mom and he's been a ball of fire ever since. Running all over the place, jumps on you as soon as you walk in the house, runs around with your shoes if you put them down..ughh..he's a little terror...LOL Cute as hell, but a terror. I'm sure he will grow out of it, since he is getting better and has stopped biting everyones ankles as they walk by. With a little more training he will be just fine. I gotta say, he learned the potty training thing real quick. When he needs to go he runs to one of the doors and sits there. If you dont notice him, he comes running back to you and then back to the door.

Without getting really long winded ( yeh I know, to late ) I guess it doesn't matter if you pick the smallest, the biggest or the quietest one of the litter. Once they get old enough to figure out who and what they are, they all find their own personality and will be who they are. Me personally, I like bigger dogs. Always had medium to large breed dogs and always will. But everyone is different. I would say deff. get that cute little female you've been taking pictures of..she's a cutie, you already have an attachment to her and I'm sure she will be great for you.

Good Luck with her!!!!

My thoughts exactly. If you like the female, by all means get her.

She will most likely be a little smaller than the males because females of all breeds are slightly smaller than males but there is absolutely no reason that a female cannot make a great pet. I have a female Husky mix and she's a wonderful dog. Get her, train her and love her, she'll make a great companion.

You cant go wrong with a lab. My old dog was a black lab, german wire hair retiever cross. Great tempermant and great hunting dog.

Now I have a purebred golden retriever. 7 years old and still acts like he did when he was 6 months at times. Tell him to do something and he'll do it, never given me any attitude, still an attention ***** though.

One thing about labs/retrievers is they are all smart dogs who like to test their limits from time to time and are always curious. Mine found out he can open the cabinet where his treats are and one time he went in took one right in front of me and just walked off. Friend's boxer/lab x figured out how to open his back door and will let herself out.

You cant go wrong with Lab. I have had 2 and they are great dogs. I have always had good luck with the runt of the litter as well but if you have a hard time choosing a puppy, let them chose you. Just spend some time with the litter and one of them will let you know they want to go home with you. I always get a female dog.
