7 Speed auto?

I was at the Dealership last week getting my wife's Expey serviced so I took a walk through the lot. The first thing I came to was an 07 Expedition Eddie Bauer EL Aside from the 50k price tag I saw that it has a 7 speed auto trans. Friggin sweet and about time. Then I went to the 150's, same old 4 speed auto, and then onto the Explorers...they had a 5 speed auto.

Now I've been biatching about wanting a 5 or 6 speed auto in our trucks from some time now just for the added economy. So, does anyone know why there's a 5 speed auto in the Explorers and a 7 speed in the Expy's but still the same old 4 speed in the 150's?

If the 7 speed is good enough for the Expy is it not good enough for a 150? Is there an issue with towing with it? (If so I'd think it wouldn't be used in an Expy)

Cost?, Torque rating?, Use?, Warrenty work?,

Prolly all play a factor, but autos suck anyway. Ford's had real five speeds since '88 and real six speeds since '99 in the trucks.

Not everyone can afford the scratch to get a manual SD. Plus you'd commit suicide if you had to drive one through the traffic here everyday.

This has been rehashed elevenity times.

The Expedition/Navigator does not have a 7 speed auto; it's a 6 speed, the 6HP26, and it's made by ZF.

As far as the why not's...the main reasoning is cost.

Its not even a real 6 speed. it had 2 diff second gear ratios. So either way it will only shift 4 times. Just depends on the load and throttle amount to what gear it chooses

That's the LS.

Our new Camry has a 6-speed auto with e-shift!

I missed it every time. Probably because I don't go into the 2004+ forums.

Now, WTF cares about cost? 1. It's being put into the Expy's so they're obviously using it. 2. Low volume keeps the price high(er) 3. The end user foots the bill anyway.

Now, since it's a 6 speed why did the window sticker say 7 speed? It it because it has 7 gears even though it doesn't use them all?
