Shotgun Identification

I was recently givin a Remington Auto Shotgun but I can't seem to narrow down the model. It's says it's a "Sportsman" on the reciever bolt (a version of the Model 11), but I am not sure if it is a plain Sportsman or Sportsman 48 or 58. The reciever has a hunting scene on both sides.
The action is typical of the Browing models with the high back reciever. The serial numbers do not match up with the Remington site library (4xxx,xxx) for any of the Sportsman models.
I am interested in finding out how old the gun may be and hence it's value

Can't help you with the gun but,http://www.shotgunworld.com would be a very good resource for you to use. I've identified and valued a couple of my grandfathers guns using the info found at that site. Just do some searching around and I'm sure you'll find something.

Many thanks for you replies

Max

I agree, but the serial numbers for that model should start with a "S", this gun does not, hence the confusion.

I will try to post a pic later, but it looks almost identical to the Browning autos, even has Browning patents on the barrel.

It's a 12 Gauge BTW

I have one of those at the house. Mine is pretty plain and I will try to post pics when I get home. It is the precursor to the Auto-5 from John Browning. Mine was inherited from my Grandpa and I am not sure of the exact date, but I believe it is pre-1920.

The Remington site said the that model was maufactured from 1930 to 1947

Mine came with two barrels, one short slug barrel, and a longer barrel with the old style cutts compensator (alot of open slits)

The serial number that I have is 76548. I know that I have found some website that gives dates of production for blocks of serial numbers. I will have to do some searching.

This is from 1998, but talks about the Sportsman. See #1236.

Does yours look anything like this.

That is the gun in your second post (ebay), with the beavertail forestock. Except miine has Sportsman stamped on the reciver bolt, not model 11.

It is simular to your "plain" model 11, except the serial number is stamped on the side, not underneath. In fact, that one on ebay is close to my serial number.

King fish, I beleive that is a later verson
