I took a look at the Gateway support site and they have a lot of info on something they call the recovery console. Been a while since I owned a Gateway and my last came with recovery CDs. The also mention a recovery partition on the hard drive. Just go to the support site and search recovery.

There is a seperate partition on the hardrive for the recovery system. When you start the computer there is a screen that comes up for a few seconds that tells you what key to hit to start the recovery process. I think it is F11. Let me go check the wifes laptop real quick. Hers should be off right now.
