But I can see it being too expensive.

There aren't many vehicles that compare with the Mustang as far as sports car and price. You could group the Vette, the Challenger, and the new Shelby together...that's about as fair as you can get.
Ford, IMO, really has a good bit of the sports car market because younger folks can still afford them. And since the Camaro and Firebird are gone, there is no one to compete with.
The Camaro will be back next year...better than ever. Mustangs and Camaros are pony cars....Vettes are sports cars. The Vettes are comparable with the Ford GT and Viper. The GTO is GMs pony car right now and is very comparable in price to the Mustang. No matter how you look at it the GT500 is just a hopped up Mustang and not in the same class as the Vette, GT or Viper (all two seater sports cars). I REALLY look foward to the return of the Camaro and Challenger next year because the competition between the 3 will only make them better (like it did in the late 80s with the 5.0 and IROCs). I really think the lack of a Cobra the last few years is do to the fact that GM didnt offer a Camaro or Trans Am to compete against the standard GT. Look for mid 2008 release of the new Camaro SS, with the Z06 LS7 it will really give the Shelby a run for its money...and thats good maybe Ford will tune it more to its potential.

I also agree that the mustang and vette are in two totally different classes. The mustang is the poor man's muscle car(or used to be) while the vette is more of the sports car. I really like the new challenge, I think its one of the best looking cars out there. THe mustang to me looks pretty good, but Im just not impressed with the engine. With the challenger, I not only like the looks, but the engine will blow away any NA mustang. I might become a dodge owner...

I agree. i think that selling these cars like ford has done with the mustang would be their biggest obstacle. Overall i think its a good looking car though

Im glad they didnt make it a 4 door sedan like the charger

They have the whole SRT8 lineup. Some models aren't very sporty looking but they have 425 hp.
In 08 the SRT10 Viper is going to have 600 hp.

I think the long term success of the Mustang has been because they have always been produced both as a high performance vehicle and an economy vehicle that doesn't look so different to the casual observer. A few accessories can make the most tame Mustang look like a performance car. A large percentage of Mustang customers are young women. They want to look sporty as they drive to their office or classroom in their six cylinder Mustang (of course some insist on the performance models).

I think GM and MOPAR will have a hard time capturing this customer with a car they can afford.

I think the fact that you can buy a low end model mustang is actualy a dowfall and the reason few people are willing to spend big bucks on a stang. THink about it, they use the same cheap materials used in a cheap low end mustang in the GT. Even the cobra, it may cost you $35k, but even cobra owners will still tell you, its got cheap interior components. I'd rather have a quality unique build if Im gonna pay that much...like the challenger.

Also, think about this. The mustang is Ford's ONLY performance vehicle....

Mopar makes sport versions of many of their vehicles, the charger, the the viper, the SRT4 neon, and many other SRT8 vehicles that sport well over 400HP.

As a result, Mopar doesnt need to sell as many Challengers as Ford does Mustang, and the CHallengers keep their value more because they arent a dime a dozen like mustangs. The fact that their are a bunch of mustangs out there really hurts their values as well.

So your saying that one shouldnt expect high quality from a mustang, wow, I need to quote that on a mustang forum lol. I think that if your paying nearly 30k for a vehicle it should be high quality regardless of the make/model, but of course thats just me and I have pretty high standards.

I'd also like to know what "average joe" can afford a $30k + vehicle??

The Challenger looks a little too plastic to me. I've always loved T/A's and this one looks good to me:
