Predictions: HD-DVD -vs- Blu-Ray

Ok folks, place your bets...

For those of us who were too young to bet on what would win, VHS or Beta, our time has come. (PS- I bet on VHS, even though I didn't really know a "battle" was going on. I just wanted a VCR, and VHS VCR's were cheaper!

It seems Sony has hedged its bet against BluRay, and Microsoft against HD-DVD. Sony has the entertainment arena under their control, but, Microsoft controls almost everything else. I doubt we'll see movies continue to come out in 5 formats:

VHS, DVD, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, and PSP

Who do you think is gonna lose? And, for you guys who really know the ends and outs of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, what's the benefit of one over the other?

I heard that already stopped making the PSP format, so that ones gone. I am by no means an expert in any of this, but I do work with a guy who keeps up with all of this and we do talk about it. But w/ my limited knowledge on the subject, I do more listening than talking :o If the HD DVD is backwards compatible then I think that'll be the way we go.

HD DVD will be more popular, but not sure it will "win" per se.

1. It got to market first and is cheaper.

2. There is no clear advantage to BluRay. Sure, theoretically it can hold more data on a disc but current BR discs have similar capacities of HD DVD. And really, how many more hours of lame movie extras do we need?

3. In a years time they will have dual format players. One box you can play all movie formats. Who cares who wins now, it doesn't matter! Thus, my opening statement of HDDVD will not "win".

For some reason I think that Blu-Ray will go the way of the minidisk (which also uses the blu-ray technology now BTW).

I got a portable mini disc player back when I was like 13 and it was sweet. The thing would not skip if you shook it like a drink mixer so I took the CD player out of my golf cart and put a MD head unit in there as well. I could get like 300 songs from my computer onto a single disc in like 15 minutes.

I used mini discs up until this year when I finally got an iPod. I don't think I ever ran across another person with a MD player though.

My understanding is that Beta has a higher quality picture. I would say that HD---with all of the TV and receivers already out, will win out.

I know! I had one, bought back in...2000? and used it everyday. I still have it and actually sometimes still use it. The battery doesn't last that long anymore but what do you expect after almost 7 years and as much use as it got?

blue ray is a lower compression. do the media density need to hold about 20 gigs per movie making the audio and video not as good of picture as HD-DVD and the media to write them onto would be much more expensive.. blue ray has no real advantages just disadvantages as far as cost effectiveness over quality

Crock of poo.

Beta was screwed by Sony themselves. They would not license the technology. The only way to get Beta was to buy a Sony. JVC on the other hand let everyone build a VHS unit for a small license fee. Sony finally let a few companies in their inner circle but it was too late. Beta had better specs but few models in the consumer market. VHS won by volume.
If you were selling **** wouldn't you have chosen VHS?

I think HD DVD will win.

Companies are stupid and think people buy because of quality, regardless of price. The price is always a huge factor in getting it "to the masses."
How much does/will an HD-DVD player cost?
Yeah, that's why so many have bought plasma, dlp, lcd, etc. tv's.

I'd say it's better compared to SACD vs. DVD-A....

Personally I prefer DTS when available.....

Blue ray is workin on a quadruple layer disk....
That will put them in the lead for data storage and back up. Not needed for multi media or home theater.

HD-DVD will be with in 10% of the cost of normal DVD and has a user freindly name that the averag consumer can identify with.

It will be a whle before we see either one affordable, so before you go throughing out your old DVD collection, I'd say kick back put in a dvd and move the chair to the opposite side of the room. The average comsumer wont beable to see a difference anyway. It's like asking them which is better, Dolby or THX?

You took the words right out of my mouth. HD and DVD are two of the biggest buzz words in home theater today. I am willing to bet that the average consumer will see these two together and be sold. Unless Sony starts a HUGE marketing campaign, the Blue-Ray will go the way of the Beta, Laser Disk and Mini Disk.
