file/program transfer from computer to computer.

Received the new Dell computer and I would like to transfer files and programs from my old laptop to the new one. The new one has a file transfer wizard, but tells me I need a Laplink serial cable, serial file transfer cable, or a Null modem serial cable. I have searched for them on the net and looked at the pictures of them, my 5 year old HP has a 25 pin on the back, wine colored, but the new dell has nothing that has 9 or 25 pins.

Can anyone point me in the right direction, or is there a better way to do this? I was thinking of trying to hook up USB to USB, I would need to get a cable for that also.

thanks

dave

Gonna be hard to transfer programs from the old one to the new one, can you just reinstall them on the new pc?

Does the old pc have a cd burner? Burn all important files to a disc, then transfer them over. plus, you'll have a backup on cd!

is the old pc able to hook up to a network? Network the 2 pc's together and transfer the data over.

Hope this helps

Dell should have it listed in their instructions or on their website. I have a new Dell XPS 410 coming on the 28th. Looking forward to it. I have had some problems with this one lately and when LT had me download some Yahoo stuff it made things even worse.

do a search on ebay for usb 2.0 to ide cable or hard drive to usb adapter.
It is a cable that plugs into the usb port on your computer and you can hook the other end to a cd/dvd drive, desktop hard drive, or a laptop hard drive. The usb cable powers the hard drive for laptops but the cd drives and hard drives require lots of power so you use the included power adapter.
here is the same one I got http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-2-0-2-5-3-5-...QQcmdZViewItem

it works great and I got all of my files from my old hard drive that would not even boot up. I used it on both my old desktop's hard drive and my sisters old laptop hard drive and it worked beautifully on my sony laptop. Oh yea, when you plug it into the usb port it will show up as either another drive or like a thumbdrive.
