Very sorry to hear this Artic. I've had several C Spaniels over the years and they are a very loving dog. Several years ago I came home from work and found the last one deceased in the back yard from old age (14). It was very hard to find one that way so I can imagine how your feeling.

I have had to put two dogs to sleep within six months of each other. I felt the same way---the vet asked if we wanted to be there or leave---my attitude was that the dogs was there for me through hard times---I would be there for the dogs. I went back to school on both days in tears. Now I have four labs, and the oldest one, which is about to turn ten, is really beginning to show his age---I do not want to think about it.

My thoughts and prayers are with you guys.

Here's a site you might want to view down the road, my friend.

The only dog that I've ever had to take to get put to sleep was an 18 year old chihuahua mix. She was the coolest dog ever. To top it off she was a stray, walked into our yard and never left. The best friend any kid coulda had. I was 20 when I had to do that. 7 years ago and I still miss that dog. I literally grew up with that dog. I know I'm going to have to do it again soon. I have a 15 year old German Sheppard mix that isn't in the best of health. She was diagnosed with cancer in april of 2004 3 months after my mother passed from cancer. The vet said she wouldn't live till the end of the year. Well here it is late Dec. of 2006, she's still kicking. She does really well for a 15 year old dog. She don't seem to be in any pain except for some arthritis in her hips which is manageable. I've been here with her since she was 3 months old when we rescued her from the pound, but really and truly she was my mothers dog. I really think she holds on thinking that she'll come home. It will tear me up when it comes time to put my mothers dog down

Sorry to hear about this!! They are def. are best friend. My dog that I remember died in my arms when I was younger while sleeping at night while passing of old age. My dog now is 13 years old and we are also going to have to put him down. He is in to much pain and we are waiting to after the New Year. The vet said it is the best thing for him. I am going to be lost without him. How do you deal with this?? He has been my best friend for almost 12 years now... I scared for the day to come when we have to put him down. I dont know if I can see it? I dont know if I can handle it... Sorry for saying but it is just making me think more about it and how we are going to do it soon...

AC....I remember a friend of mine showed this to me when my dog had to be put down. It's extremely sad (so don't read it if you don't want), yet it also gave me a sense of peace.

Dogs Don't Have Souls, Do They?

I remember bringing you home. You were so small and cuddly with your tiny paws and soft fur.

You bounced around the room with eyes flashing and ears flopping.
Once in a while, you'd let out a little yelp just to let me know this was your territory.

Making a mess of the house and chewing on everything in sight became a passion, and when I scolded you, you just put your head down and looked up at me with those innocent eyes, as if to say, "I'm sorry, but I'll do it again as soon as you're not watching."

As you got older, you protected me by looking out the window and barking at everyone who walked by.

When I had a tough day at work, you would be waiting for me with your tail wagging just to say, "Welcome home. I missed you. "You never had a bad day, and I could always count on you to be there for me.

When I sat down to read the paper and watch TV, you would hop on my lap, looking for attention. You never asked for anything more than for me to pat your head so you could go to sleep with your head over my leg.

As you got older, you moved around more slowly. Then, one day, old age finally took its toll, and you couldn't stand on those wobbly legs anymore. I knelt down and patted you lying there, trying to make you young again. You just looked up at me as if to say you were old and tired and that after all these years of not asking for anything, you had to ask me for one last favor.

With tears in my eyes, I drove you one last time to the vet. One last time, you were lying next to me.

For some strange reason, you were able to stand up in the animal hospital, perhaps it was your sense of pride.

As the vet led you away, you stopped for an instant, turned your head and looked at me as if to say, "Thank you for taking care of me."

I thought, "No... thank you for taking care of me."

You're not the only one. Dallas was diagnosed with a form of leukemia in 1999 and I was told she had 9 months max. She was with me until late 2001. And I was lying with her on the floor that night as she passed. She was a Black Lab/Australian Shepard mix. Awesome dog. Now I have an Australian Shepard and a Border Collie/Heeler mix. 2 dogs that are just as cool.

Arctic, I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. Pets become very much a part of our lives and it's hard to say good-by. Remember all the good times with him and take comfort in the fact that he had a great life with you and goes to heaven knowing he was loved.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

They will not go quietly, the pets who’ve shared our lives.

In subtle ways they let us know their spirit still survives.

Old habits still can make us think we hear them at the door,

Or step back when we drop a tasty morsel on the floor.

Our feet still go around the place the food dish used to be,

And, sometimes, coming home at night, we miss them terribly.

And although time may bring new friends and a new food dish to fill,

That one place in our hearts belongs to them . . . and always will.

So Sorry for your loss...

Those of us who have a little dog that we love just as much as you love yours will surely understand.

For those who do not, you will never understand, nor will you ever realize what you are missing.

There is nothing like coming home (no matter how good, or bad your day was) to a happy waggy little tail that is ALWAYS underfoot and so happy to see you with their own special kind of "Hi daddy!" greeting.

When I eventually lose my little 3 year old Beagle I know that is it gonna destroy me, at least for awhile. I cannot even imagine...

He is the best Christmas present I have ever gotten. We travel in our business, and he usually even comes with us. I know he is spoiled rotten, but about the only time he is not with us is when we go to church or out to eat, and we have to promise to bring him a little something, or else we have to dig him out from under the bed to put him in his "room" (laundry room with a bed and a radio playing softly) where we put him when we have to leave him at home.

I know that it will take some time before you can, but maybe the only thing that will even come close to making it better is another little dog...

Here, you can have my truck, just leave my dog alone...

I am going to start a new post in just a little while with a true story that just happened about my dog and his Christmas presents...
