Cleaning Cola From a Laptop

One of the boneheads I work with spilled a coke on to her keyboard. In turn, the unit won't boot now.

Any suggestions?

I was thinking about pulling it apart and using electrical contact cleaner to attempt to remove any 'goo' that may be on the mobo or other components... thoughts?

Send it to me...I'll beat the coke out of it with my running board

I just got more of the story... I think it shorted.

She claimes that the lappy was ON when it happend. While she was trying to 'clean it up', the machine shut off on it's own.

Sounds like a short to me... geesh, what a bonehead.

That's about the best I can suggest. I've got electrical board cleaner that dries fast and is safe for that treatment. Clean what you can then let it dry out...

People + Laptops + Soda....never a good thing.

Remove the keyboard and inspect the parts below. If cola residue made it to the system board you may be screwed, seek professional help. If the keyboard took all the damage go online and order a new keyboard.

I've replaced about a half dozen keyboards over the years. They seem to take all the abuse 95% of the time. One hazelnut latte did make it past but didn't fry the laptop... however every time it heated up it smelled yummy!

Anytime any liquid is spilled on any electronic item, you need to turn it off immediately and remove the power source from it. Then take it apart and clean/dry it out before trying to powering it up. It might be to late, but it's worth still trying. Check with a computor repair place to see what type of cleaner you should use.

Insult to injury...

She's leaving the company on the 31st. She has a *massive* report that is due to a client before her departure. She was 95% done with it. It wasn't backed up.

...and the world turns.

Maybe the HDD survived... any way to test one short of installing it on another lappy (and potentially frying it because the HDD shorted)?

I wouldnt worry about the hard drive. Pull it out, make sure it's clean and 100% dry, hook it up and go.

Rockpick,

To test the laptop hard drive, you can buy one of these:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817155602

It is designed for upgrading laptop hard drives, but it also allows you to run a laptop hard drive directly from any computer's USB port.

Yeah, like the rest of the guys said. Forget the shell of the computer and pull the hard drive. Then try and use it in another computer.

When I read your first post, I said to myself, sure blame it on "some girl".

That bites though, hopefully you're able to get it worked out.
