Fishing : Spincast or spinning for beginner?

as some of you may have seen
in the thread about a gift for my dad i have decided to buy 2 fishing reel/rod combos

i plan on buying one kit and one reel/rod combo to get us started
ive never fished and he hasnt in ages

so now i need some tips and opinions from fishers since we are basically beginners
we plan on just doing it to have a good time and throwing the fish back, nothing major

i plan on getting the spincast starter kit from ****s sporting goods because i feel id be more comfortable with the button on the spincast.

http://www.****ssportinggoods.com/pr...archId=2291573

and like i said i want to buy one reel/rod combo also for my dad to use, but i need to know, should i get him a spincast or a spinning?
i know a very long time ago he fished , but would it be better if i got him a spinning reel/rod combo instead of a spincast?
reading things online it sounds like spinning is better for people who are older and spincast is easy for younger people.
the spincast i could get for him is

http://www.****ssportinggoods.com/pr...archId=2291573

and that one is an "underspin" which if anyone knows about id like some info too.

and if i get him a spinning i could get him

http://www.****ssportinggoods.com/pr...archId=2291573

im sure there will be much more in store but thats most likely what it will be

also, could someone explain how spinning is different from spincast, is it just that you swing the line into the water without having a button to launch it

your help would be greatly appreciated

-JB

It's all a matter of personal preferance. I don't like the spincasters at all. I think that Quantum combo would be a great starter set for the both of you.

The spincaster is easy to use but I've always had problems with them. The spinning reel is easy as well, you just have to open the bail and hold the line with your finger and then let go of it when you cast. One or two tries and you'll be a pro. I'm sure you will be happy with either one, I'm just giving my opinion in hopes it helps you out. I've got 6 rods and they all have Spinning reels on them.

Either one is pretty good. It comes down to user preference. I like bait casters but they are kinda hard to use but they work well.

Buy a nice light to medium action rod. Remember you only get what you pay for. If you buy cheap stuff then thats all you get cheap stuff that breaks down. You can do a nice combo for about $75.00 to $100.00 for both reel and rod.

My favorite rods are Berkley!! They stand behind their product!! I broke a rod this summer and they replaced it free of charge and no questions asked!.

alright thanks for the tips so far guys
heres my situation
im definitly getting the rods from ****ssportinggoods

and i have 4 products to choose a combination of 2 for

i have these to choose from.

Spinning Rod/Reel Starter Kit $15.00

Spincast Rod/Reel Starter Kit $15.00

Shakespeare Spincast Reel/rod combo $20.00

Quantum spinning rod/reel combo $20.00

those 4, i need a 2 combo out of em, one starter pack and one rod/reel combo, one will be for my dad n one will be for me. i feel the starter pack one should be for me because it seems cheaper, however its a foot longer than the rod/reel combo, does length really matter in these? if it doesnt right now i feel the spincast starter kit would be better to get for myself, and the spinning rod/reel combo for my dad, because i dont think he would like the "underspin" spincast.

thanks for the opinions so far -JB

I would go with the first Shakespeare spinning combo for you and the last one on your list, the Quantum combo for your Dad. I think you'll be happy with those.

sounds good to me
so basically you think a first time fisher would be fine with a spinning rod?
it sounds like itll either be the both spinning or the spincast kit and the spinning combo, the spincast combo doesnt seem very good

if i get the spincast kit and the spinning combo maybe we could switch off?
its all up to you guys aha i dont know anything about fishing right now, im sure if you think spinning would be fine for first timers then im sure i could go with that , i hear spinning is more reliable and stronger, but spincast is easier

-JB

sorry if it seems like im talking in circles lol.

You should pick your rod/reels by what you're going after. As far as gear ratio, rod length, rod type (light, medium, medium/heavy and heavy), line type (mono or braid) and line weight.

I use mostly baitcasters and a few spinning but I mostly bass fish. Here are my baitcasters - 2 Daiwa's (mono), 2 Quantum's (spiderwire braid) and a Shimano (Yo-zuri hybrid).

nice
im basically going after a light duty rod that wont be needed to do magic tricks, jus to catch small fish in a creek or lake that we would throw back.
thats why i would like to go after 2 spincasters
i have a feeling i could find a combo that has the button, instead of the "underspin" which doesnt look good to me in store, the site doesnt have much.
dam im so confused

do you like that spiderwire?

When it first came out everyone raved... then after a few tournaments the chances of snagging and rats nest were realized and less and less people use it for time purposes....

The fishing hole also plays a role on what reel will be easiest to use.... If your in brush, a baitcaster is the only way to go, after you've learned to use it and learned how to pitch with it.... If in a large body of water, spinning reel and good length rod gets the most distance, in a small to medium sized pond with bass, perch or samll cat, a close faced is suffecient.

Ok, so a light action rod for creek/pond fishing.

Next, what is your budget for both sets? Please don't go with one of those "Snoopy" rods packaged with everything you need. You won't like the stuff that it comes with and you'll be looking for new gear shortly.

Also, will you be fishing with bait or plastics/lures?

I'll go looking through the ****'s website for what I'd buy.

I love the spiderwire, when I'm fishing in hydrilla or stumps (or both like the pic below) nothing pulls out the biggin's like spiderwire. With other lines I had to baby the fish but with spiderwire and a hefty gear ratio, I can muscle them out without having to worry about my line breaking off.

thanks for the help

but im gonna go with a spincaster starter kit and an underspin spincaster for a total of about 40 dollars with tax
the underspin spincaster seems a little bit better than the button spincast.

i know theyre not the best but i have a budget n this is the first time we will ever be going fishing
i jus want to do it to have a good time
n hey, if we get into it and love it then well go back and buy better ones together

like somebody said in a previous post
its just to have a good time
if we want to get better ones
no money was lost and it was a good experience.

thanks for the tips guys but im pretty sure i know what im gonna buy now after all this

thanks again,

JB

It is all about fun, no matter what level of fishing you do. That's what it comes down to.

To bad it's so close to Christmas or I'd send you some light spinning rod/reels I have laying around that I don't use anymore.

:santa:

I was thinking the same thing, I've got a zebco 202 combo I got for a door prize some where, brand new never opened. Hmm maybe I should ebay that thing before it gets broke.
