Anyone have a Weimaraner or Lab/Wiemar mix?

I am going to be getting a Lab/Weimaraner mix, puppy at the end of January I was just wondering if anyone else has one? And also if the Wiemaraner breed has any specific needs or traits? Also anything else that I should know about them?

Thanks in advance!!

I can't wait to get the little thing! It has been 4 years since I had to have my Black Lab put down (she was 14, and started to have quite a few health problems), and honestly not having a dog in my life has been hard. Since I grew up with either Labs or a Golden Retriever/Lab mix.

My parents have a Weimeraner that I know extremely well. It is a really freindly dog. They keep it in the house, which it is probably a little too big for, but they like it.

It is a really poweful dog too... I can't imagine it with the energy of a Lab... haha.

You're going to have a very large (60# plus) rambunctious, good natured animal that chews up everything in sight even when it's an adult.

You'll need three cases of chewy ropes, two cases of bouncy ***** and a truck load of beef flavored raw hide chews.

A gallon of bitter apple spray will help steer their chewing habits to the appropriate items.

Also, if you don't currently get enough excercise, you will now.Daily walks are a must, weekend hikes are barely optional. You can not keep a dog like that in the house and expect it to be a lap dog, it's a field dog to the core and it needs to get out a lot.

Also, get two if you can swing it, nothing is more enjoyable than watching a pack of labs bounding across a field.

I have three labs and a labX. Thankfully we have an acre and a half with an underground fence---they love to run---and run they must. Remember the creed---"A tired puppy is a good puppy"

My four are very sweet---they would all be lap dogs if you let them---but, since you already owned a lab (or did it own you?) (mine do)---exercise is a must. Again, I am thankfull also that I live very close to two large MetroParks systems. Weimies are indeed very strong dogs---and to combine that with the size fo a lab (two of mine are 80 lbs and are not fat) well, you might consider a stable...

Best of luck to you---enjoy the teethiing---syou know from your lab, they will chew on almost anything for 2 years.

Have fun, and Merry Christmas,

Tim C.

Thanks for the feedback guys!!! I am prepaired for a dog with alot of energy, and my girlfriend says that she is, but I just don't think that she knows how much energy we are talking about My house has 3/4 of an acre with a bike trail that boarders the eastern edge, so the dog will be able to run alittle bit and walks shouldn't be a problem. And if the dog really needs to get out and run, my parents own 17 acres thats only about 1 mile from my house. Plus I have a few friends that have gotten puppies in the last year, so he/she will have plenty of other dogs to play with.

As for the chewing thing, I am not sure if we were just lucky or what, but I don't remember any of our dogs chewing alot. I know my last dog just loved chewing on 2X4's and 2X6's, but nothing destrucive.

The dog will also be an indoor/outdoor dog. My girlfriend wants it to be an inside dog, but I grew up with outside dogs so I am a tough sell on letting it be inside all the time. So I bought a 6X12 kennel, I am building a roof for the kennel and also a heated dog house (the only way my girlfriend will let it be outside) over my christmas vacation. At night and during the day the dog will be in the kennel, and after we get home from work it will be either inside with us, or out in the yard somewhere.

Again thanks for the advice!!

If he is anything like my Airedale Terrier. He will be a handfull until you get him fixed. The only thing he really chewed on was one coffee table and my computer chair legs. Thats about it. It amazing to watch how fast they grow. You will enjoy it.

I have only seen one of that mix and that was several years ago when I lived in Oregon. It was absolutely beautiful. Hair was a little longer than but the same color as the Weimaraner, eyes were almost the same as the Weimaraner but a little darker. The owner was standing beside Lost Lake throwing a rock about the size of a grapefruit into about 5 foot of water and the dog was diving in and bringing it back to him. I stopped to watch because I had never seen a dog that looked like this one before and as I struck up a conversation with the owner I asked him how he was sure the dog was bringing up the same rock. He put an "X" on it with his pocketknife and threw it in the lake again and sure enough the dog brought up the same rock, layed it at his feet, and waited rather inpatiently for the owner to throw it again. The dog was very friendly and very well behaved.
I have told my wife about that dog so many times that she now finishes the story if I mention it..Please post some pics when you get it......

Hey Marc, the dog that you are talking about it exactly what I told my girlfriend that I would like get, with the light tan-grey coat. But about 5 mins ago I got off the phone with my buddy whos dog is having the puppies. They were born last night and all 7 of them are black with 2-3 have little white spots on their chest. So we are going to see them sometime this week, I will take a couple of pics of them all and post them on this thread.

I think we are going to get a female. So now we just need to start thinking of a name.....

I don't have one,... yet. I'm getting a weimaraner puppy from a Regen Weimaraners in Washington sometime in March or April. I've done tons of research on 'em, everything I read says they're very energetic, needs to run and excersize and are very devoted to their family. My wife is part of the local AKC in Alaska, and she shows her Keeshond in agility and obedience. She'll run the new pup through the same classes, but I'm taking him through hunting and tracking so we can do some water fowl hunting. I'm starting to look forward to getting him as well. I haven't talked to the kennel in a little while, I think I'll have to e-mail them after this and see how things are going for the spring litter.

Good luck with your new lab/weimie!
